Hi Marius
Don`t know how old the battery was, it was in the Lada when I bought it. Make was Dixon and I don`t like them. I try to use Deltec or Probe as they last 8 to 10 years. The one I fitted is 5 years old. I used to service a 500 kva gen set and as it was for essential services the 4 batteries were replaced every 2 years. I inherited the old ones ;D. Also replaced 1 in the Landy this week and it was 8 years old.
Regards
Ronnie

Hi Hercules
When I changed the wheels 2 weeks ago I checked and saw that I only had 1.5 - 2 mm of pad left on the front brake pads. I see on this topic on p1 you say that Ferodo FDB 195 fits the lada and wondered if you have them on your lada and how they are working as I will need to replace mine soon.

Hi Ari.
I replaced my disc pads yesterday with new Ferodo FDB 195 Premium pads from Midas. This pads is the Lada pads and on the box it stated that this pads is for Lada 1600 Niva 4x4 Estate 1979 onwards. The previous set done 42000km. It is the only aftermarket pad for Lada available and no other make are available. They work very well as it is suspect of a Ferodo pad. The cost is around R400.00 per set.
Regards.
Hercules.

Hi Hercules
Thanks for that info. Will check mine again next weekend and see how they are doing.
I should probaly have a look at the rear brakes too while I'm about it. Do you know any shoes that fit the back or not?

Hi Ari / Hercules The companies in your area who specialize in rebuilding clutch plates and brakes, should be able to replace the worn outer rear brake "lining" of Ladas as well.
It has been done twice on my BMW motorcycle's rear brake shoes before, but not on my Lada's brake shoes yet.
The companies just remove the worn outer lining of the brake shoe, and replace it with a new one - the prices are usually a lot better than the originals...........
If it can be done on the thin BMW motorcycle brake shoes, I am quite convinced that it could be done on a Lada brake shoe as well. I have seen huge truck brake shoes which have been rebuilt at a local Brake and Clutch company as well.

Hi Hercules
I assume you used original Lada valves ?
I removed the loose / broken valve stem seal, and discovered that the valve stem, as well as valve guide is slightly worn as well - will rather replace them now while everything has been stripped.

Hi Marius
I am starting to run out of cheap ideas will keep racking my brain for what it is worth. The petrol cap is the original I have put stainless steel labels on it re leaded/ unleaded petrol which may make it look different.

Hey Guys
Does anyone know what kind of materials I can use to recover my dashboard? I struggled for three hours yesterday, and two hours on friday night to stretch leatherette over the whole thing, but even my skills have proved inadequate to complete tasks. Ideally, instead of using leatherette, there should be a product like PVC, that can stretch, that has adhesive on its underside. I could mold the shape with my hands and it would stick. Does such a miracle material exist, or am I dreaming?
Help!
Laters.

Hi All Here`s a tip on how to get the plastic bumper ends to look and stay like new. It works on most plastic and rubber including the rubber facings of the bumper. Regards Ronnie

Hallo Danie.
You are correct that I used original Lada Valves obtained from Jan at R700.00 a set for inlet valves. I re-used the exhaust valves.

Fiat 128 front windscreens fit on Ladas - available at the major windscreen dealers (like PG Glass, Glasfit, etc,) countrywide.
Currently available at PG Glass for about R3300.00
Thanks to Ronnie, Hercules, and Marius for this info.

Hi All Just finished fitting central locking today. The kit is available from Autostylin In Jhb or Durban at a cost of R395 including remote. It is not difficult to fit just a bit time consuming. (I have plenty of time ;D). It is not easy to take photos as every thing is hidden in the door. You can see where the linkage joins up to the locking mechanism. The kits are for 4 doors so as soon as i get my hands on a push button I will use one of the spare units for the tail gate. Regards Ronnie

Hi All I have now installed a switch to open and close the central locking from inside. The kit does make provision for this. The switch I have used I think is a power window switch out of a Ford Sierra. Ari this would confirm what the two red push buttons were for on your Lada. You will see the switch to the left of the heater controls. Regards Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
Did you by any chance modify the interior lights in my lada? I see there are round lights at the back of my lada. Also the bulbs were removed in all the interior lights and when I replaced them I saw why. They wouldn't go off. I tried everything , closed the doors put the switches in different positions and nothing worked. I found though that by disconnecting the middle wire on the lights they could be switched off or on at leisure. I then put in a switch for the back lights too.

Hi Ari
The rear lights are out of the rear of a MK11 jag They used to work via the door sws. The most likely place to cause them to not go off is the door sws or a short on the door sw wiring. A short there will NOT cause a fuse to blow as the door sws are AFTER the lights and will only cause the lts to remain on.

Hi Marius
The sws were from Jan. I don`t know how much as he owed me money as the Lada did not have a RWC when I collected it.I think I still have one left which I bought when I had Ari`s Lada. Looking at them they should not be expensive. The one on the extreme left was an illuminated sw I modified as an overide sw for my cooling fans. It also lights any time the fans come on either automatically or on overide.
