Thanks guys, and for the link Danie. I have already trolled endlessly through Gumtree, Junkmail, Ananzi, Autotrader et al, only to find most of the ads old and sold. But my quest has only just begun...[Damn, I think I'm hooked already]

Hi kleynhap and 'welcome to the asylum' :-) Give Lada Centurion a ring as I understand that Michelle is looking to sell her Sidekick. Jan Pretorius' cellphone number is 0829057711. Regards and 'best of luck' with getting your Lada sooner rather than later. Keith and CERATOTH

Peter, check the car very carefully, make a test drive and test ALL the gears, listen very carefully to noises coming from the drive train. Don't let the seller fool you when he claims that any irregularities are due to a long stand stil. My experience tells me that an owner who takes care of the body and interior is also strict on maintenance and takes care of the rest of the car We'll thumb for you

Yeah I know it wrong for Dad to borrow Son's car......but I'm not complaining ! We drove it Sunday on the freeway from Pretoria to JHB - no problems other than a bit of vibes. We also tested it offroad too , hi lo range, big climbs, She's a DIRTY girl already.

sort those vibes, they will destroy several bearings in the gear box and tc

"no problems other than a bit of vibes" sounds ok as most Nivas do have some vibration. The less vibration you have obviously the better, but if it is at an "unacceptable" level you should do something about it.
Marius PS - you will know when it is "unacceptable"! ;D

Marius I agree, the vibes are not harsh at all, and at 110 kmh the vibes go in and out of sync every minute or so. Leads me to think probably the driveshafts . Its definitely not bad and can wait a while. Does anyone know if the diffs have the same ratio ?

The front and rear diff ratios are the same.
Just remember, the ratio on the 1600's diffs are different from the 1700 diff's.

Hey guys, I have placed pics of my ....er...my son's Niva on the member pics page. Hi Nothing showing yet. Two things 1 If you post from your PC the pics have to be fairly small 2 Don't try to preview before you post. The system will remove the pics. Most chaps use Photobucket, Flickr etc if you want to post larger pics Regards Spikes
