Hi guys and girls, I am Russian Canadian, at the moment visiting Russia. About a year ago I became more active in Lada forums (started at US Lada forum) and this interest developed into successful Lada export - sedan 2106 is currently heading from my hometown Vladimir, Russia to New York, USA to one of US Lada forum members. I found this a very exciting venture, and now that I know all the regulations, I thought I'd let the world know that I can find pretty much any unique Lada in Russia. I'm not aware of South African vehicle import regulations, but I'm sure you guys know. Besides, it should be easier than US regulations, because from what I understood while browsing the forum, new Ladas are still sold in South Africa? Anyways, I'm here to share what I know, talk to Lada followers from so far away, and if you have some particular interest in importing any Lada or any Soviet-built steel - we can definitely do that too. Igor

Hi Igor Warm welcome to the forum! We have one rule here which is quite a big obstacle. The vehicle has to be RHD. Sadly there are no more new Ladas for sale in South Africa since 2003 Regards Marius

Wow, I did not know about RHD requirement, as well as about AvtoVAZ quitting export to one more country... thats sad. As I get more information from joining different Lada forums all over the world, I get a bigger picture obviously, and what I see is - there is always one obstacle or the other, and all Lada fans all over the world have to overcome those obstacles in order to get parts, get vehicles, etc... unbelievable:(

Hi Igor
If you can get AutoVaz to make RHD Nivas, you will be able to send them to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and England. You will have a huge market.

Hi Igor Welcome to the forum. Just as a matter of interest - what is the price of a Niva at the moment ? Also, would you able to send any of these front Diff brackets to South Africa - and if so, at what price ? : You can reply by PM if you wish. Regards Danie

Hi Danie
I am sure Pavel can get those for you for a song. Just out of interest the new Niva sells in the UK for about 11 000 GBP.

Hi Marius
I have already contacted Pavel about the brackets a couple of months ago. He has informed me that he could get hold of brackets, but that the price would be quite steep.
That's why I have raised this question now - maybe Igor could get hold of brackets from another source, at a better price.

Danie are those standard brackets for the 1.9 diesel or are they conversion kits for the petrol Niva?

Hi Marius
The brackets at the second pic has been advertised as "Diesel Niva" brackets - but I THINK both sets of brackets (top as well as bottom pic) should fit to our local front diffs.
I stand to be corrected though.

Danie, just to make sure: the question was about both front and back Niva 1.7 differential brackets and shipping is to Durban, right? It is Christmas here (Jan.7th), and lots of businesses will be closed, but I'll try to get the info asap.

Hi Igor
I have just verified the info about both different sets of brackets.
Although the sets look different, both sets fit on all Niva front diffs. Both sets were originally designed to mount the front diffs on diesel Nivas , because the diffs could not be mounted to the diesel engines. Apparently the Niva diesel engines vibrated more than the petrol engines, therefore the independent brackets were more suitable on the diesel Nivas.
Apparently the part number on both sets of brackets is 21215 - 10
Another question, and just as a matter of interest - would you be able to export Niva diesel ( new or used) engines to South Africa ? If so, at what price ?
Many thanks.
Danie

Hi Igor, Welcome to the forum! It is surely special if somebody that can speak Russian joins the forum. Just for information: The customs duty on new vehicles into South Africa under R130,000.00 is 36% (under R130,000.00 there is no ad valorem tax to add - many items attract an ad valorem tax too). Vat is 14% for all goods. Therefore the Niva with VAT (excluding transport) = R90,255.00 Add the import duty (of 36%): R122,000.00; the minimum for a new Left hand drive Niva landed in SA (excluding Transport). The new Niva is of course much improved, and the quality of assembly apparently still the same. The above is of course only likely for an individual, and may change if: 1.) Mass/quantity discount can be negotiated with the supplier. 2.) If the importer can get a rebate from government if you bring in the vehicle in knock-down form (for example convert the Niva locally to right-hand-drive - I bought my Niva in 1995 on the knock-down-form basis and then paid R50,000.00, including VAT of 14%, for the vehicle new - right hand Nivas were still available then). 3.) Transport, as far as I know, is very negotiable due to the international economic slump currently, and South Africa is on a very active sea-route. A new Suzuki Jimny 1300 cc (manual transmission) sells for around R188000.00 including VAT and should be financed by all major banks (which may not be the case with new Nivas). I hope the above is of some interest. Just keep in mind that apparently the right-hand-drive steering boxes for Nivas are scarce currently. Regards, Fanus Attachments:

Danie, in terms of exporting new Niva engines - that should be easy, since they are nothing too exotic for Russia:) Internet sources say it should cost about R10,500-11,000. Don't quote me though, but sounds about right.

Fanus, you provided an interesting insight! So, it is basically, illegal to have a left-hand drive vehicle in South Africa? One may not import one and may not insure/drive it? I contacted AvtoVAZ yesterday. First a lady told me they only produce LHD vehicles, but then I said "How come, you made RHD cars for export", so it is probably possible to order a few (possibly when they are all prepaid). So, I wrote them "official email" - sounds strange, I know:) and now I'm waiting for their response, which will come no later than... 14 days! Well, what can I say, it is not Mercedes plant, and besides, I am 101% sure that their reponse will be of no use, and I'd have to ask again - the same question but with different words.

The price of the brackets is about the same as quoted before - but the transport cost makes those components too expensive.

I assume the price is for new Diesel engines ? Hmm... good question. Probably not, because diesel Nivas are fairly rare here, from my observations.

Hi Danie
Importing refurbished or second hand parts into South Africa is not that easy. It is much easier to import new parts.

Welcome to the Third World Dimitris! ;D ;D ;D Marius Marius....Unfortunately for us here in Greece, now this is not a joke but reality! Here we have too many problems, especially the last two years. Quite right Dimitris. Europe and especially Greece is in big economical trouble. The bad state of the EU economy has quite a big effect on us here as well - esp for the people who export goods to Europe. We can all only hope that things will stabilize soon, but once again bad politics and greed is the major obstacle to economical stability.

Dear Marius ... bad politics and greed
The crisis has drawn many years ago ....( globalization, new world order, etc.)so the level of subsistence societies to turn 30 -50 years back. In the next months and years, many countries will have problems similar those of Greece ...... Unfortunately for all us..... especially for the new generation!!!!
PS. I think that later you can delete all these because it's off topic
