Hi Fanus
Ironically I have been without "electric power" for most of the afternoon! ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for yet another thoughtful post regarding the discussion. I am not going to elaborate much but only to say I had the privilege to watch the movie. Naturally there has been some criticism from "certain" people on the movie and even the EV1. The movie however clearly and factually demonstrated how far (low) politics would go to protect their own greedy interest.
Their "stupidity" has however came back to haunt them during the energy crisis when the Japanese and others are taking the lead and GM is now struggling to survive.
The funny thing about GM is that they deliberately gave the EV1 project to a couple of "young and inexperienced" engineers and they came up with something that was fantastic!

For the first time in 6 years Kamaz did not take the number one spot on the podium. The honours goes to the Dutch/Belgium! Iveco team followed into second place by a fully Dutch team in another Iveco. The next three places belonged to Kamaz. Interestingly the Russian Army has recently bought a couple of Ivecos (different version). Marius Attachments:

Hi All, Here is something attached to chew on regarding the future of the electric car in South Africa, based on a currently produced all-electric propelled vehicle, for sale to the public (if they got the guts to buy one right now). A few things to keep in mind regarding the cost calculations: - We do not know if the example used is based on subsidised fuel. Electricity is currently subsidised in South Africa.
- As Ronnie pointed out the current range of an electric vehicle is max 300 km, if you do not use the aircon. Our older guys managed without aircons in cars for decades, but currently it is very important in cars. Keep this in mind; it will play havoc with any range calculation if the aircon stays on. Remember, it is not just for pull over and fill up as is currently the case with petrol/diesel. They must still make a battery that can be charged full quickly and last! (Again as Mr reality, Ronnie, clearly pointed out).
- The electric car-in-South-Africa-scenario can change overnight if the government jumps in to finance charge points on main routes (or subsidise petrol stations to install it), but sadly, this will not happen in the next ten years; there is not even enough electricity to support the current industry, let alone fuel urgently needed growth and to curb the unemployment monster that is going to cripple South Africa in near future!
- The linear torque supply of an electric motor is a dream come true for a real 4 x 4, but not likely to be introduced in the near future due to the weight of batteries, and the structural reinforcing that will be required to accommodate the weight. Again, as Ronnie partly pointed out, the Dakar cars will always stay hybrids, unless they change the rules to suit/favour all-electric-propelled cars! Until then us mortals will have to settle for the winch only! How modern is that! To build extra reinforced low volume 4 x 4’s will not happen soon, Dakar or super talented and loaded Geniel or not- it is simply too expensive for motor manufacturers, especially in this current economic climate. They are only in it for the money, as GM clearly demonstrated.
Just for interest sake. All-electric-propelled cars were sold in South Africa many years ago (decades), and I was one that had sleepless nights in making plans where to get the money from to buy one then (for the novelty of it). If I remember correctly, and there are forum readers old enough to still remember; it looked like a Rambler Hornet (or may even have been a converted one). The selling line was the acceleration up a steep incline compared to a Ford or Chev V8 of the day! There was and is just one thing better than a fast, screaming two-stroke motorcycle, and that is a super quiet accelerate-like-hell electric vehicle. Regards, Fanus Attachments:

Fanus one should keep in mind that the modern electric car is designed for city commuting and mainly to aid in bringing down the smog levels.
One should also remember that electric driven vehicles was very common at one stage in the previous century. Just think of the trams that was used very successfully in most modern cities until they were shoved aside. They were replaced by very inefficient and noisy ICE buses!
In my time milk was delivered door to door very efficiently in electric powered vehicles and just one day they all disappeared. Suddenly you had to get into your very inefficient ICE car to go get some milk at P&P!
With today's technology in batteries (you have read the real story!) and modern lightweight materials you can easily build a smallish family sized car that can reach well over 300kms. Back in the late 90's they were able to charge an electric car within 15 minutes. Just about the time it would take to take a wee or a smoke or even something light to snack on.
Now, if they can build service stations 300kms apart, you can travel from Gauteng to Cape Town without any trouble at all. Much like an ICE car!
Mind you there are millions service station all over the country/world already so they would just need to add a few fast chargers and off you go!

Fanus we had a similar discussion about the EV-1 many moons ago but I can't seem to find it I wanted to move the posts into that thread. Anyway Fanus here is another very interesting electric vehicle (4x4). Look at the bottom of the page >> locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=lounge&action=display&thread=473&page=59One should in theory be able to move forward from here - even if it's only baby steps Marius PS - still on topic as it may well one day feature in a Dakar ;D
