Hi Guys.... when the factory fitted matting gets really wet it smells really bad ! Now that it has dried out it's not too bad but I hate to think what it would be like going back to a closed up CERATOTH after a hot humid day . Going to get look at Dynamat tomorrow when I go to get the replacement CD player. What I think I will be doing is to put back the rubber mats using some type of underlay (carpet/Dynamat), lining the 'tunnel' and side panels with similar before putting back the very flimsy covers and then painting the front of the footwells with the bakkie rubberpaint. Should look OK and no worries about 'stuff' coming loose and getting stuck under the pedals. After a visit to Lada Centurion to get the carburettor cleaned out and various other bits and pieces sorted CERATOTH is once again 'up and running'. (Thank you Jan / Michelle). Will let you know what I decide to do about the underlay after I've decided who should get the Champagne.......watch this space :-) Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

Hi Keith While vegetating on the couch I happened to watch some Jackass 3.5. After the brainless antics I think Ceratoth should rather be called Chelydridae Chelydra and not terrapin. Chelydra I think is just WAY cooler Regards Vincent

Hi Vincent....'snapping turtle" ? What a coincidence that I have just read your post; as today I managed to shut my little finger in CERATOTH's driver's door whilst rushing to get the back panels in place before the heavy rain arrived. Nice neat amputation of the top 2-3 mm of my finger....ouch. Yes 'CHELYDRA' would be most appropriate. Just have to check with my local Midas/Autozone to see if they have the letters needed to affect the change. On past experience recently the answer will be 'no' as everything I've wanted to get CERATOTH back on the road after her 'wash' is ' currently out of stock'. Things can only get better ! Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH.

Hi Guys. I'm learning new skills everday as a result of CERATOTH's 'little adventure'. Spent this morning getting quite high on the fumes from the glassfibre repair kit. All of the splits/cracks/holes in the hard plastic bits of the lower trim have now been repaired and with a couple of coats of Duram NS5 Metcote High Adhesion Etch Primer (and a lot of pre-painting wet sanding) the end results are quite good. All seems to have blended in very nicely. Still awaiting the underlay....should be here on Monday and then I can announce who has won the Champagne Have a great (accident free) weekend. Hi Guys. Good News CERATOTH is now running like she used to Every thing checked, changed where necessary and all seems to be in good order. Now starting with the interior and the champagne must go to Ronnie. Visited Success Upholstery and Plastics in Johannesburg as he suggested and got everything I needed for the underlay and carpets. Thank You Ronnie....now how do I get the champagne to you or you to the campagne ? Another big 'plus' was finding a supplier for those little plastic 'widgets' which hold everything in place. Tried Midas, Autozone and other local motor places without any success and then my local Mica showed me the catalogue from 'skiffy'. They are fairly local to me in Midrand and do have a counter sales department.....so I paid them a visit. Wow....what an experience. They must have at least 2000 little boxes stacked around their reception area all filled with little plastic 'widgets' of every shape and size. You can buy one or a thousand of any item and the staff are really friendly and helpful. I got everything I needed to put all the trim , mats etc. back in place. They also have an online service for those Lada owners not lucky enough ( ;D) to live in Gauteng. Visit www.skiffy.comThanks again Guys for all the support and let's get that champagne to you Ronnie before you leave for colder climes. Regards to all at LOCSA Keith and CERATOTH

You can also shorten Chelydra to Chelly (or Shelly) - Still a female name for a Niva ;D ;D ;D ;D I am in Gauteng next week and will make a concerted effort to get together at the Radium Beer Hall Regards Vincent

Hi Guys, Charles...no pics posted yet as I'm still working on my options for inside CERATOTH. Underlay and rubber mats a definite yes. Thinking about not putting the rear seat back in as with only me and Li this will give us a lot more 'packing space' and it shouldn't be too difficult to 'carpet' that area. Also looking at putting some type of 'rubber finish' behind the pedals rather than underlay/carpet. Again, more space for my big feet and perhaps safer ?
Vincent...that sounds 'like a plan'. Just give me a ring 072 993 4955 and we can sort something out. Regards and best wishes to all at LOCSA Keith and CERATOTH.

Hi Keith We have been running our NIVA with the back-seat out as well. Beware of flying missiles, or build a screen in between the front seats and rear compartment.Boxes and parcels move all over Regards Spikes

You can build a frame and bolt it to the four holding nuts where the rear seat bolted down Be advised that noise levels increase with the rear seat removed

Hi Ratel ,When i removed my rear seat i did not notice any noise level difference in my Niva but i do have a number of layers of carpet underfelt on the cargo area floor of the Niva.About 3 layers i think then i put the rubber mat over the top .Sounds very quiet inside realy .This or something like it should solve any noise problems you may have .Best of Luck Mate ,Cheers Trev .

Darius, On a std NIVA without any addition to the std carpet and std underlay the noise level is appreciable. I normally have a load of files and various bins in the back which keep the load stable and dampens noise Spikes

Hi Trevor Thanks for the frame pictures. @darius, bear in mind that you would have to leave a gap to reach the boot release OR convert to electric ala Ronster Spikes

Hi all
Like Spikes I am talking stock standard here. Most of the noise at the back actually comes from the wheel arch area on either side and I experienced some wind noise from the rear vents. I used some type of cushion filler and foam material in those areas that made a substantial difference.

Thank you very much guys!! I love the look of the cargo barrier Trev! Spikes I wonder if Trev thought about that. . . . lol, ;D I know I would not have unless you didn't mention it!
I might be looking at putting my toolbox right up against the cargo barrier and have sondor cut out foam in which I can put my tools and make it look very neat. If you remove the rear seat, put a cargo barrier there and then a toolbox with tools smashing in the metal box it will irritate the hell out of me. Thus is the reason for the sondor foam cut to fit tools into.

Nope the barrier ain't my claim to fame. Most delivery panel vans have them. All off road racers with space behind the driver and navigator have them. Even the Beach Buggy I used at Alexandria had one. Put the tools in canvas bank bags sorted by type and rolled up. Keeps them quiet.

Hi Guys, The Cargo Barrier seen in my Bumble-Bee Pics is just something i threw together one day as i had these old security screens that came of our house when we bought it and i was going to throw them out but thought i would just run a tape measure around them then thought wow ,exactly the right size to make a cargo barrier for the Niva .So thats how it came about for me as ive always said to many people that everything has a second use and this proved to be just one of them and still got a few screens left .I found it made a perfect place to mount my spare tyre to aswell .Cheers Trev .

It really looks awesome Trev! I am still in training to have the know how of doing such things!!
I am short, so putting either the tool box or Spare wheel there will not be easy to reach for me. I might need to rethink where I am going to put them. But I am definitely going to copy your idea of a cargo barrier. If I may. . .

Hi All, I agree that rubber mats will reduce some of the noise, but surely once you sealed the Niva completely with a product like Plascon coating I referred to, you can easily paint a sound deadening rubber as thick as you want over the hump in the middle (or where-ever needed). In fact I stuck rubber on the underside of the prop-shaft tunnel when I stripped my Niva down, but will surely paint rubber on in the inside later. All in the name of sound deadening. (Exposed rubber on the underside of a 4 x 4 is not a good idea, because it can catch fire, so I will cover the rubber later with the Plascon product). For me the main issue was and still is on the inside that I want to clean a mess quickly and easily, because I use my Niva for real off-road and places I never visited before. The last thing I want to do when on a trip is to think of the water and mud that inevitably will end on the inside of the cab. Some trips last days! I love the idea of the screen and also plan to remove the rear seat (I will just have to get past the wife first, because I made a "slight" mistake once to convince the wife for us to buy a station wagon and then installed the mother of all boom boxes in the rear - she wanted the station wagon for the two children. My explanation that my two 15 inch woofers were like two sons to me did not go down well. Basically the same silence and looks when I bought her a 30-06 for her birthday a few years back so that we could go on hunting trips together. I will never understand woman! I mean who of you guys know a man that will buy his wife a hunting rifle for her birthday)? Regards, Fanus

www.flickr.com/photos/keithbatkins/Hi guys I'm really struggling with posting photographs using either photobucket or flickr....so please bear with me if I just post them one at a time ! CERATOTH is now fully restored...I know that it doesn't look like much has happened inside but .....all old underlay has gone and has been replaced with new; which has then in most places been covered with heavy duty rubber backed (not foam) carpet. The original rubber matting has then been put back. I did remove the carpet from in front of my feet and replaced it with Duram Bakkie Rubber. Much more practical (safer ?) and does give me a little more room for my big feet. Back seat has also gone to give a bigger load bay and is being stored in the garage just in case it has to go back in at some stage in the future. All in all a good months work and given the circumstances I guess that I was really lucky to get away with so little damage. Thanks again Guys for all your help and advice and Ronnie..... Safe Journey Regards to all, Keith and CERATOTH
