Thank you all for all the replies. We'll have a look tonight when I get home. Just a last two things if possible, what to do if rotor needs replacement and any advice on permanent electrical distributor replacement?

Check the carburettor fuel bowl for petrol and make sure the level is correct. Then you should be able to eliminate petrol supply problems. check all electrical connections HT and LT. Eroded connections in the terminals inside the cap and on the rotor arm would need to be very bad to stop the spark jumping the gap. When you are towing, if there is NO attempt to fire check first for a spark at the plugs and if none check next at the HT lead from the coil to the distributor. A good coil should be roughly 3 OHMS between the + and - terminals. To me it sounds like a problem with no spark.
