Would anyone be intrested in a 1700 engine, gearbox, transfer case and front diff?
Engine would be complete with carb and distrubutor. Front diff with sideshaft, excluding outer cv joints and transfer case would include front propshaft.

2wd. 2.0L Mazda engine and gearbox. Maybe a small turbo at a later stage running at 0.5 bar boost. Should give about 150kw on the wheels.

Outer cv's are needed to keep my wheel bearing in place.
Mike I would like R3500 for the engine and R2500 each for the tc, gearbox and diff.
If I decide to do it. For what I want to use my Niva for it looks like a better option.

We should remember that Douw did such a conversion, it looks bloody nice and is ideal for what he wants to use it for. I saw his mountain bike on the roof, I also do mountain biking and believe you me, no Niva can go where a guy on a mountain bike goes!!! Who knows, I might find a niva to do it as well with (I do want two of them), I know of a 1600 standing somewhere ideal for such a conversion. . . The reason I might convert, I also love the look of a Niva, but the soon to be father in law and his daughter reckons that if we go standing in the middle of Angola, Congo, Moz, Namib, Botswana etc and the Niva breaks down, where do I get parts then and how soon (will we have enough BEER and BRANDY to live on! ;D). . . Then they said, there are other 4x4's whom have more accessible parts all around Africa, Toyota... Aahh well, although she is my "soul mate", she is clearly not my Niva Mate..... Hush! No one tells her that should you ever meet!

After all, a reliable, modified Lada is always a lot better than a rusted wreck at a scrap yard......

Hi Charles
No I do not understand. If you want a 2x4 rather buy one. What is wrong with yours. A 2x4 Niva is not a Niva.

Here is a small experiment.
Remove your front propshaft and then take your niva for a drive.
I guarantee that it is just not as good as having 4x4.
There is also a really k@k gevoel when you cannot get up a grassy slope because the Niva is only a 4x2 (Been there, got towed out by a peugeot)
Rather work out how to keep the transfer box and 4x4 AND the 150kw - THAT WOULD BE FUN !!!!
Regards Vincent

Maybe Marius (MainChair) can reply to this and post that other thing he once sent me when I first started to talk and look into buying a Niva. I believe it was a system which you can use to choose either 4x2 or 4x4, can't remember that well, neither can I remember my thread heading. let me look . . . . Found it www.ladaworld.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=45

Hi Darius
Why anyone would want to fit this to run in 4x2 mode is beyond me. You loose all the roadholding you get with permament four wheel drive, and will gain very little if anything.

Hi Ronnie,
That might be true! But if the person only enjoys the look of a niva nothing else really matters. . .
Ronnie, I have this gut feeling that you are going to purchase a new Niva M in UK and make us all bloody JEALOUS!! We will need to talk and ar a lot of updates about what is available and what ain't!!!

That might be true! But if the person only enjoys the look of a niva nothing else really matters. . . Very true - we should never tell any member how to kiss his wife / her husband, nor should we tell any member what to do with his / her Lada. I simply love the look of a Lada, and I just regard the 4wd as a bonus. Most people who own a 4 x 4 vehicle in South Africa, hardly ever use their vehicles in off road conditions . So if any owner loves his / her Lada, and he / she is thinking of a 2 WD conversion - why not . Danie

Hi Calla Just bear in mind that a 2x4 NIVA will be less attractive to sell than the real thing regards Spikes

Hi Spikes
How right you are. I don`t think many people would buy a Niva if it were a 2x4. I have said it before and I will say it again if it is 2x4 it is not a Niva. A conversion like that is a step backwards.

hahaha ai ai ai
Spikes, that is a very good point you make there. . .
I have this gut feeling that Lada Nivas will become more and more popular in South Africa, especially if I take into account the amount of guys that phoned me for my green Niva. Would I sell this one I have (almost) now when there aren't any imported? Not easily. . .

Hi Ronnie, I agree with you that a 4 x 4 Niva is a real Niva, and that a 2 x 4 Niva can never compare. The thing is this however, some people do not want a 4 x 4. Just look at the RAV and the other look-like-a-4 x 4's around. I listened to a woman a while ago on a radio program that asked a motoring journalist which 4 x 4-look-alike he would suggest, because she does not want to pull all the weight along and was thinking about the extra fuel a 4 x 4 will use. The reason why she wanted the vehicle was the condition of the roads and the peace of mind a sturdy vehicle provides in SA. Although this was not mentioned I also think driving the "in-thing" must not be underestimated. One of my family drives a Porche Cayenne, and to say the least it can only be to show off, because they use the vehicle on a kilometre of good dirt road every day! A Niva got lots of all the above and the individualistic element also, because Nivas are not common at all in SA (Important to young people). Because a Niva is built from thick(er) steel it should lend it to a weather proof, reliable, rattle free soft top conversion. There is also enough space to fit an air-con and a power steering. It is a piece of cake to fit a new generation turbo diesel engine in a Niva if the front diff can be removed for keeps. (Good fuel economy, reliable and good performance). For all you know you may one day export 2 x 4 Nivas to SA (I will do the right hand drive conversion this side). Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus
I am afraid no one can convince me that converting a Niva to 2x4 is a good thing for any reason at all ;D. Apart from my thoughts on the matter, Spikes hit the nail on the head re the resale of the vehicle.
