pff, who needs a reason to buy a Niva? Being drunk and a bit crazy at the time of (first) purchase helps a lot. I should never have found these Niva forums full of escaped lunatics who claim that niva is the best. Now i'm just one of them ;D Thanks for that ;D
haha, just joking, of course Niva is the best, can't imagine my nick would be toyotabelgium. Sounds like shit
lets all sing our song: 'when my starter dous not work, i just cranck it by hand...' all together now ;D

Hi Jan, I have heard of a guy from SA going (drive) with his Niva to Russia to buy a new one one of these days. Maybe you can strike a deal with him to drive the old Niva back to SA? The cost of the ticket back to Belgium will be a lot less then Any reason to make the across-Africa trip is a very good reason. The only possible complication is that you will have a hard time to load enough beer to enjoy and to hand to the bribe takers. In Afrikaans we say "'n Boer maak 'n plan." of "Waar 'n wil is is n weg". Being enemies in our own country we are not allowed to say the word "Boer" in a positive context (an Indian politician in SA lost his job because he jokingly said " 'n Boer maak 'n plan en 'n Indian two". Aparently the blacks understood it to be a racist remark). I feel so sorry for the Toyota drivers. So my advice to you: Do not say anything, just do it. Come to sunny SA an join the Niva Nutters for a few cool ones. Here we do not drink beer to get on a high, here we drink beer to cool down and to sound intelligent some of the time and to +- act like a locals ! Just imagine; that will be a story to tell in Belgium: Jan from Belgium drove to to SA in a Niva, had a jol with the white racist pigs of the apartheids era, was not hijacked or murdered while here in SA and flew back without being arrested by the security police for planning a revolt or being a drug mule. Amazing; sometimes reality is much better than dreaming or just talking. Viva the Niva! Regards, Fanus Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus It sounds like a good idea to drive a new Niva from Russia to SA, but as no right hand drive Niva`s are made, it is not possible. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,
meaning one not allowed to import a left hand drive car in SA anymore? I owned a big left hand drive Alfa a few years back in SA.
I personally would also not go that far to fetch a car that I will have to reverse to get through a toll gate when alone, but owning a new Niva would be nice. Lucky enough with the new "tollgates" left hand will not be that much of a problem.
Just for interest sake driving a left hand car in SA was no problem for me (especially not in the city). The only problem may be when you drive risky and want to overtake while tailgating. Left or right hand does not matter offroad.
Regards,
Fanus

Hi Ronnie, Good to know about the new law. I wonder if it got anything to do with accident statistics? I actually plan to meet the guy that want to go and buy his new Lada in Russia. He sounds like a real enthusiast to have planned something like that. I hope he also want to join the forum. This make me wonder if there is a law against driving/importing right hand drive cars in Europe? maybe you may know moving there soon? Or is the UK not the same as Europe? Just interested. Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus
As far as I know LHD is not a problem in the UK. Remember most of the EU is LHD and passports are EU with free movement between all the countries. I doubt if the UK would be allowed to ban a LHD as they must follow the EU regulations. That is why there is no Quarantine in taking animals into the UK after 1st Jan 2012.

Neil from the UK mentioned that the new Ladas are regarded as grey imports.
