Hi there I am new to the forum, except for a post I put in yesterday where a few of you were very helpful. I recently bought my first Lada and have yet to experience the full pleasure of what she can do. Here is a link to some of the pics of her www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150288428826082.330984.610661081&l=16eb024ff7&type=1Sadly I have yet to figure out how to attach more than one pic at a time . I am not usually this technologically challenged...sad but true. I currently live in Jagersfontein, Free State but am aiming on being in JHB by next year. Hopefully there are a few more 4x4 routes there than in this area I look forward to being a part of the Lada world and the fun it is sure to bring. Ciao for now

Hi Maddy
Glad to know that your dad is perfectly capably of keeping the Lada up and running. I think you are in a perfect position to keep the Lada going at a very affordable price.
When you shop around for spares locally and you are not happy about prices, please stay away from the semi- automatic - and whatever you do, please do not aim at Jagerfontein's old diamond hole !
If You are not happy about local prices, you can always get parts directly from Russia - at very affordable prices.
By the way, I still can't stop giggling when I think about Jagersfontein - having spent three weeks there at a mining "kampong" - many, many moons ago.....
But that's another story . ;D
Regards
Danie

It is great having my dad to show me the ropes where the lada is concerned. The whole aim is to have a refresher course in servicing vehicles etc as I used to do this myself (farmers daughter what can I say).
You are spoiling all my fun...the old hole is the best for target practice. I used to go 4x4ing on the mine dumps when I lived here 6 years ago but sadly they are washing the dumps so cant go there anymore. You would be shocked at what this town looks like now.
I will definitely keep in mind the info you have given about parts, generally it is cheaper to import than to buy locally. I also followed the link to the spares in this forum. Very handy stuff.
Regards Maddy

Hi Maddy
Maybe I should share some of my "Jagersfontein experience" at the mine "kampongs" with you:
During the cold winter of 1979 I was part of an Infantry Battalion which did intensive military training in the Jagerfontein area. The mine "kampongs" were empty at that stage, and served as "Base Camp" during the three weeks.
I was part of the "Voorspan" - a group of 10 who have transported all military equipment from Bloemfontein to Jagersfontein, in order to get everything in place for the training.
At that stage almost all of us were more or less "gatvol" for doing military service every year of our lives.
In short - when the complete Battalion arrived, the 10 of us (the "Voorspan") suddenly realized that the Commanders who planned the training camp, completely forgot to get the ten of us involved in the military training sessions !
So while the whole Battalion was involved in intensive military training during the cold winter days and nights , the ten of us were having a very welcome and unexpected holiday for three weeks !
We have spent our days by tanning in the sun behind the mine dumps, skiing down the dumps on carton boxes, or whenever a military truck was heading for Bloemfontein for whatever reason, we just jumped on the truck for some shopping in Bloemfontein!
Needless to say, the whole Battalion , except the Commanders were aware of our existence ! The troops who were submitted to the training were very jealous, but they never told the Commanders about our group who had a lot of fun while they were suffering.......
I guess this experience is nothing to be proud about - but it still puts a smile on my face to this day .
Regards
Danie

Hi Danie
That sounds like it was a great holiday. It is amazing what a small world this actually is. I would love to test my Lada out on those dumps but have to apply for special permission now seeing as they are now working the dumps. It would be a great place to do a test run. I got stuck there before in an old landrover (to be recovered by a Niva) - the nose just sunk in the dump mud and winch and all was under. It took 3 days to get it out. I must really find those pics and post them here.
That is what I love about 4x4, you can go through a trail no problem and still have fun OR get stuck for a few days, be covered in mud and still have a smile 90% of the time.
Regards Maddy

Hello Maddy Welcome (I know that others have already welcomed you) and it sounds that your Rugged Niva has arrived at a good home I get to "play" most days as my Rusti is a working Niva and I travel to remote sites to complete my work. The Forum has a number of dedicated Nivasti who are always there to lend a word or tear as you may need. Regards Vincent

Hi Vincent Thanks and I am extremely glad that I found this site (thanks to Baxter's Lada Niva Site). Everyone has been great so far with their advice and I appreciate all the help I can get. The Lada has been my dream 4x4 since I was able to drive - now I have it . Cheers and thanks Maddy
