The value of the Rand is taking a serious knock at the moment, and I have just placed another order from Pavel - before parts become even more expensive, due to the value of the Rand.
My previous order from Pavel included a 5th gear which did not fit on my spare Gearbox. Some investigation by Pavel indicated that the 5th gear which did not fit, is for Ladas from 2004 on wards. Before 2004 all 5th gears have 15 teeth on the smaller side of the gear, while the newer models have 14 teeth on the same side of the gear.
Pavel undertook to send me a new 5th gear free of charge, which will be included in the parcel which will leave Russia tomorrow.
Pavel, if you do read this post - thanks a lot for your great service !
Regards
Danie

That is good business practice - thanks Pavel! I did not know about the extra teeth on the old 5th gear - now I know why the Russians insisted that I replace the 5th gear cluster with a new one Marius

Pavel has sent me a couple of pics to show the difference between the old type 5th gears (before 2004), and the new type 5th gears (2004 on wards) : This pic shows the old style 5th Gear (15 teeth on the smaller side) - which is applicable to all Nivas models, before 2004. The teeth on both Reverse Gears (big one at the left and small one at the right) are also different, and this set of gears needs to be used as a unit. The big Reverse gear at the left does not have a splined center - like the new type Reverse Gear. These gears are applicable on all Ladas with 5 speed Gearboxes in South Africa: This pic shows the new style 5th Gear (14 teeth on smaller side) - which is applicable on all Nivas, since 2004 on wards. The teeth on both Reverse Gears,( big one at the left as well as small one at the right), are different from the teeth of the Gears as used on all models in South Africa. The big gear at the left has a splined center, unlike the big Reverse Gear as used on 5 speed gearboxes in South Africa: As far as Pavel is concerned, I will not hesitate to make use of his services in future. To my mind he has already proved his honesty, and he is clearly prepared to walk the extra mile for his customers. Danie

Hi Jaco / Trev Yes, the 5th Gear at the latest pic has 15 teeth at the smaller end, and gets used at pre-2004 models. Trev, this is the link: motors.shop.ebay.com/arterx/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562Only a few components has been listed at the link - Pavel sells anything you might need though. For parts which has not been listed, just send him an e.mail at: barter2007@gmail.com I have ordered the parts via EMS mail, which obviously speed things up a lot. Regards Danie

I have just made a money transfer to Pavel, to get hold of some parts which are still needed to rebuild my Lada's original engine properly.
The engine has been partly rebuilt, and it will obviously make sense rather to put everything together, the sooner, the better.
This time I have ordered the parts via ordinary Airmail, and I am keen to see the difference in delivery between Ordinary Airmail, and EMS Mail.
Will report back as soon as the parcel arrive.

I don't think I will ever order parts from the Ukraine via ordinary Airmail again.
Pavel has posted my parcel on 15 Oct , and has sent me an e.mail with Tracking Number on the same day as well.
Today (25 days since Pavel has posted the parcel) I phoned the Post Office to do an investigation on the Parcel, which has not arrived yet. According to the Post Office the parcel has left the Ukraine on 27 October, but it has not arrived in South Africa yet.
This obviously means the parcel was floating around in the Ukraine for 12 days, before it left the country !
The moral of this story - anyone who might be in desperate need of parts, and might be thinking of getting from the Ukraine - just take note - maybe you should rather consider getting your parts via EMS mail....

That is the risk sometimes. A couple of years ago I ordered extra long (tall) mountaineering kit from the USA worth $700 which translated to R7000 back then. No tracking or insurance on my side as it would have made the cost go up to something like R11000. In 3 months, 3 days before we would leave for Mt. Kenya, it did not arrive. So I Skyped the company asking them if they had any idea on what was going on. 2 days later the guy contacted me saying I should contact DHL in connection with the new package they sent. I was lucky! ;D But then Customs ruened the party charging me R4400 for import duty.

There are no direct flights from the Ukraine to South Africa - so I hope my parcel is just lying on a shelf somewhere in Europe at the moment ...

Danie you can try tracking the parcel on the internet (better than phoning) via the Post Office?

Hi Marius
I have tried that, and have done a Google search as well - without success.
I will send Pavel an e.mail in this regard - hopefully will be able to give more information.

You can track it online with the tracking number untill it leaves the Ukraine or the Postal Service. When it gets to the SA Post Office Service it gets a new tracking number and this is where the paw-paw might hit the shovel.
So the safest is using an international courier service where you have one tracking number from dispatch to delivery, but this pushes the price up quite significantly.

The only way to minimize your risk is to order parts in relatively small batches. I hope you get this sorted soon.

Pavel has responded to my e.mail - apparently the parcel has left the Ukraine on 18 October, and not 28 October as indicated by our Post Office. Pavel has sent me this link where I can verify the shipment details: www.ukrposhta.com/www/upost_en.nsf/search_post?openpageI have verified my parcel's shipment details, and my parcel has indeed left the Ukraine on 18/10/2011 . So I do not know where our Post Office got their information from . Pavel has also informed me now that one of our members who visit this website regularly, received his parcel 45 days after the parcel has left the Ukraine. So be warned - parcels ordered via ordinary Airmail from the Ukraine could easily take a loooong time before it will reach its destination ! Danie

The only way to minimize your risk is to order parts in relatively small batches. Marius Hi Marius I think it is actually better ( safer, as well as cheaper) rather to order parts in bigger batches via Speed Post (EMS). For example, this is the details of my three orders from Pavel: First Order: Weight of parcel: 7.5kg Quoted cost of Standard Airmail : $90.00 Quoted cost via Speed Post (EMS) : $106.00 Difference in Transport Cost : $16.00 Second Order: Weight of parcel : I did not keep record, but the weight was less than the 1st parcel. Quoted cost of Standard Airmail : $61.00 Quoted cost via Speed Post (EMS) : $87.00 Difference in Transport Cost : $26.00 Third Order: Weight of parcel: No record either, but weight is definitely less than the previous parcels: Quoted cost of Standard Airmail : $58.00 Quoted cost via Speed Post (EMS) : $94.00 Difference in Transport Cost : $36.00 The difference in Shipment Cost on my first order (the heaviest parcel) was only $16.00 - while the price difference in Shipment Cost on my latest order (lightest parcel) is $36.00. So I think it is quite clear that is is better to order parts in bigger batches - and to go for EMS mail. Danie P.S. I do not know why the quoted EMS cost on my 3rd parcel is higher than the EMS cost on my second (heavier) parcel.

The 45 days was Charles and me. He gave us a refund because he thought that the parcel got lost, but it arrived the next week. Then we paid him again.

Hi Ari
Thanks for mentioning your experience with Pavel here - to mind this is just more proof that he is prepared to "walk the extra mile" for his customers.
In his e.mail this morning I could also sense that Pavel is worried about the fact that my parcel has not arrived yet. I have responded by ensuring him that it is not his fault that the parcel has not arrived yet.
Right from the start I was fully aware of the fact that shipment via Standard Airmail could be more risky. In fact, in his first e.mail to me Pavel has also mentioned that Standard Airmail is more risky than EMS Speed Post.
I still believe that my parcel will arrive in the near future - but should it be lost, I will not accept any refund from Pavel . I have ordered this parcel from Pavel via Standard Airmail on purpose, knowing very well that this shipment would be more risky.

Danie Hi Danie I had the same problem once, what it is is if pavel did not place the invoice on the outside of the package, customs holds it until you provide proof of invoice etc at there depot or email them the invoice. check with customs i am sure it will be there and also check with the tracking number with them as they issue a sa tracking number. only ems parcels are deliered to your door if invoice is placed on outside of package. Best of luck. Regards Mike

Hi Mike,
Thank you for sharing your experience regarding ordering spares from overseas. I will from now on insist on the sender attaching the invoice on the outside of the parcel (especially for urgently required spares).
