Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and bought a used Lada Niva 1.7i a week ago.
However the current Russian Mud tyres on it but is warn and I need to put the Lada through a road worthy test.
My problem is, that I can’t find any 175/80/16 tyres…well I found some at Tiger Wheel and Tiger, Yokahama’s for R9k for 4. Which is a bit high.
Does anybody know where I can find these type of tyres and a reasonable price?
Alternatively, what will happen if I put 205/80/16 on the standard 16” Lada rim?
It looks like the 15” rims tyres are easier to find than the 16”, perhaps I should just change the rims to 15”.
I see on the one forum, there seems to be some concerns regarding Lada Centurion, any reason? I live in Centurion as was rather glad to find a Lada supplier close by.
Thanks,

Hi Grimmwolf
Welcome to the forum. There is currently only one tyre available in SA that is an exact fit for the 16" rim. LOCSA managed to import a bunch of Nankang FT-7 175/80R90's and a second batch of 20 tyres is expected at the end of this month - beginning June.
Currently they are available for R770 a piece which is a huge bargain. The only catch is you will have to make arrangement for the pick up in the North West Province. Let me know if you are interested.
Regards Marius

Hi Marius,
Thanks. Yes I am interested. And I'll take 5. Where in the North West can I pick them up?
Thanks again,

Hi Grimmwolf
I will send you an email shortly with all the details that you need for now.
The Yokohamas - are they the Geolanders? If they are the 175's they are only available in the EU and Russia as far as I know. Judging by the price TW&T will be able to import them but I doubt if they have any in stock. Have you seen the tyres?

Thanks Marius,
I asked for the Geolanders ATS G012, but they don't stock them anymore. He quoted me on 7.50X16 110R 8PR TT Hajari.

Hi Vincent,
Thanks. At this stage I'm more concerned with getting the Lada through the road worthy. The vehicle is in a bit of a mess and I still have a lot of work to do on it but the engen is in good shape but needs some TLC. I bought it for R25k and spend most of this week getting all the ants and spiders out of it. No pest free I can start on the actual repair work.
I have spend R500 on oils and anti freeze already, and there some pannel beating to do, but minor. Except for the tyres, my only other likely mission is going to be the speedometer and rev counters that doesn't work. I'm hoping that it is only wiring issues.
A friend of mine, who use to be a mechanic will teach me the basics, so I can rescue myself if I get stuck in the bush. So yes, I'm new to the 4x4 thing as well.
Thanks,
G

Thanks Marius, I asked for the Geolanders ATS G012, but they don't stock them anymore. He quoted me on 7.50X16 110R 8PR TT Hajari. These tyres will work but are too big and will throw your speedo out by about 10% and they might touch the arches under articulation. Ari

Thanks Ari,
At the quoted price, they didn't really make it on the procurement list.

It might be worth a try to go and ask a toyota garage if they dont have a set of those tyre. The land cruiser bakkies comes out with a 750 tyre. Most guys fit bigger tyres. So maybe they have a set lying in the back gathering dust.

Hi Grimmwolf
Welcome to the forum. You can read the history of Lada Centurion in "Service: good or bad". You will find it under general page 2. If you use them, use with caution. The Niva is simple to work on, and to learn on if necessary. There is a greater range of Tyres if you change to 15", but if possible you would be better to wait and buy Tyres from the batch Maurius has on order. This will be by far the cheapest route to take, and your Niva will have light steering, no hassle with front wheel bearings, and will be unbeatable off road.

Hi Grimwolf
One other thing you should be aware of, the 175x80x16 is the ONLY tyre to fit under the bonnet.

Hi Ronnie,
Thanks. I have chatted to Marius and the tyre issue has been resolved and I will stick with the 16".
I'm pretty dumb when it comes to mechanical stuff, so I am speaking under correction, but my understanding is the altenator of the Lada's are located at the bottom right of the engine and can therefore get damage rather quickly if you go through deep water. The plan, in time is to install a rear bumper swing and attach the spare wheel to it, thus allowing me to move the alternator to the top left of the engine. This is suppose to be something rather straight forward to do.
Regards,

Hi Grimmwolf
I think it is a wise decision to stick with 16" though no doubt some would disagree. Try to do as much work as you can yourself, everyone here will give you good advice on how to do it

Water doesn do any real damage to a altenator. Only is it gets submersided on a regular basis.

Hi Plain water is unlikely to damage the alternator BUT be careful of the bottom hose on the radiator. Anti-Freeze buggers and alternator good and solid Spikes

That is true Spikes. I forgot about pointing that out. Luckly mine has a tap on the left so I don't have a problem. After you did a water crossing, and you are home and cleaning your Niva just let the hose run over the altenator for a couple of seconds to wash all the dirt out. Just take it for a nice drive afterwards to dry out nicely.

I talked to a auto lec (a good one) and he said there is nothing in a altenator than can get damaged by water. The bearings are sealed and en the brushes is touching the whole time so dries imediatly.

Ha, ha,
Find in YouTube section with the Lada Niva clips - "Crazy Russians". They put a long snorkel to the exhaust and another one to the air filter and run the car on the bottom of the lake as submarine. Nothing happened to the alternator. But the crew needed scuba equipment.
