Hi All
The idea 0f this thread is to be able to see how long it takes from ordering parts to receiving them and the pitfalls if any. I ordered a thermostat from LADA UK last month. I sent an inquiry on Sunday 17th April and received a quote the same day. I ordered the part on Monday 18th April, goods sent Tuesday19th April. The part was in my post box this morning, May the 4th, and the good bit is there was no import duty or VAT. 18 days at a total cost of 24 British Pounds (R268.80).

Hi Ari
It does not take long to order from overseas, and the wait is worth it. Mine came over the Easter Holidays, other wise I think your time is close to the norm.

Ronnie Hi Ronnie The fact that you did not pay Import Tax or VAT could be caused by the way the goods have been sent to you. Import Tax (20%) plus 14% VAT are definitely applicable on all spare part imports . If the Taxman keeps on slipping up on parts from the UK, it might be worthwhile getting parts from there. Danie

Hi Danie When I collected the small parcel it was in my post box. The invoice was visible through the clear outer cover. I am not complaining . It might also help if the parcels are small and do not attract attention. Ronnie

Isn't it illegal if you do not pay the import duty and vat?

Hi Charles
It would be illegal if you were the one evading the tax. I was not asked to pay any. I assume if the customs had levied tax and vat there would have been paperwork and the fees would need to be paid at the counter when collecting.

Isn't it illegal if you do not pay the import duty and vat? Charles Correct - but it is not illegal for the Government to waste our hard earned money . And apart from that , we are one of the highest taxed countries in the world. So who cares Danie

We import product as a business (Sweden, Italy, USA and UK) As a business we are registered with SARS as an importer with a Valid Import Number.
Private individuals should pay tax and duties on all NEW goods they purchase. Having said that, SARS is not overly concerned about the individual importing (relatively) low value items for own consumption. Should Ronnie decide to sell his thermostat and SARS found out about it there could trouble.
This would be the same as ALL purchases made on any overseas website (Amazon etc) as SA still has exchange controls in place.
Our biggest costs believe it or not or transport costs. An item may cost EUR 300.My Freight (estimate received earlier today) excluding Import VAT and duties is R3754.00 excl VAT...
SARS is after the true smugglers and tax dodgers...

Hi Trev Well the definition of taxe is .... In SA Businesses are taxed 29%. There are however the myriad of sneaky and "hidden" taxes that creep in that as a business owner mean we see a very small portion of the profits. You do however have a functioning state health care system. Back to the thread, all imports should be subject to import Vat (14%) additional dduties may be applicable depending on the commodity and its duty classification

Hi Charles
I know the items I am buying on line here are all within the UK but the service and deliveries are outstanding. I ordered a compressor for the garage (very big and heavy) at 6.30 pm on the Internet and it arrived by lunch time the next day. New rollers for the shower doors ordered on Saturday delivered on Monday. You can order anything on line and be guaranteed delivery next day.
