Does anyone have any info for me about racing Nivas. I have the Dakar preparation manual. I am looking for any info. Especially stuff like mods to the drive train. I have heard rumors that there is a non taper front wheel bearing conversion out there but ban not find any info except 1 pic on Baxter's.
Thanks guys
Charles

Hi Charles
You need the Id, OD and width of the bearings to be able to source a replacement bearing.
I would be reluctant to change from Tapered bearings as you are able to change the bearing preload very easily.
Earlier today I serviced the from CV's and read the bearing tightening procedure - I believe most of us are over tightening the bearings....
A deep groove ball bearing is a great bearing but cannot handle the constant axial loading that a taper can handle. You would need to replace the DGBB after a relatively short period of time. Perhaps someone in the forum is a bearing expert and give you better insight.
Regards Vincent

Hi Vincent The mod I saw is using sealed bearings. I think that will be a nice upgrade. Charles Attachments:

Give BMG or SKF a call - Their technical departments and ask them about a suitable bearing.
It is possible - But not without sacrificing lifetime against the hassle of regreasing bearings.
SKF - 0118213500 BMG - 0116201500
Don't phone your local branch as they do not have the necessary skill set to advise you properly.
Good luck Regards Vincent

Hi Bob
It pays to fit grease nipples to any place you can.

Hi Bobby
Any particular reason for the heavy wear and tear on the bearings?

Hi Marius
Bobby's Niva is actually a submarine ;-) The mud holes I think wereprobably to blame

Hi Vincent
In summer I do a lot of water - but I use blue grease in my front wheel bearings and elsewhere with good effect. Well I hope so as I have not checked the condition of my bearings lately. I will soon.
Unfortunately it would seem that the particular brand is no longer available.
Maybe you would like to comment on using this type of grease? Any other brands you can suggest?

Hi Marius
What was the blue grease made by? Was it perhaps Blue Chip?
I will put together a list of greases that are in my opinion what Lada's should be using.

The grease was made by Everon in Cape Town - can't find any trace of them anymore Marius

Hi Bobby Any particular reason for the heavy wear and tear on the bearings? Marius One set of rears lasted 1 1/2 hours on the highway! it turned there was only a whip of gease installed at the factory!(genuine) I eventually pulled the sealed bearing guard off and fulled them up with grease, sorted out now each took about 3/4 teaspoons of grease and the front Im still not 100% sure there but the nipples and 100 pumps of grease in there have them sorted,

Hi Bobby
The only other reason that I can think of is that perhaps they are too tight? If they are too tight they will not even last a 1000 kms.

Hi Bob
If you want to pick the seal off any sealed bearing you will find there is virtually no grease in from the factory. In some of my previous posts on the subject I commented that the bearings were only allowed to "smell the grease on the production line"

My bad - I was actually referring to the front ones as you seem to have sorted the rear ones.
