HI Everybody,
I am the proud new owner of a 2000 Lada Sidekick (green - as you can see from my username). It has now been a week since acquisition and no regrets so far, except the price of the service I did today (more than a third of the price), anyway, just wanted to do the intro.

Just for clarification: the service was a third of the price I bought it for... Is this the norm?

Thanks, good to be here. I paid R 30 000 and drove the car from Potch to Pretoria to be serviced by by a LADA specialist and at the end got an invoice for R10 000. Had to stop twice on the way back (not once going there)- gearshift came loose while driving, brakes failed and idling is a mess - nothing was wrong when I went there this morning.
I will post some pics soon.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I have a feeling you have been ripped off - but it depends what was included in the service - esp if there were repairs involved.
A basic service on a Lada (changing the oil, plugs and filters) should not cost you more than R600 if you do it yourself.
The Lada is very easy to work on and even if you have very limited technical skills you should be able to handle it easily. You can download all the manuals from our website (Home Page button).
Feel free to fire away if you get stuck - the active members on this forum is always very keen to give a helping hand.
Regards Marius

Ok I missed your latest post.
Did the car jump out of 5th or any other gear?
I don't really want to ask - but who is this specialist?
You unfortunately might have to go back and let the specialist fix the mess he made - at no charge to you.

Thanks Marius I already downloaded all the manuals and printed some too. I am not totally technically disabled and has done some work on vehicles before. The brakedown of the invoice as follows: Major Service: R2050 Front CV's Overhaul: 1 x R1800, 1 x R2400 Clutchkit Fitted: R3948 Front Brake Pads: R430 Gear Lever Boot: R45
Total: R10673
I do realise that this is a specialised market and I will learn to do it myself, but wanted to fix a few things before causing too much damage to other components.
I will most definately ask in the future.

The gear shift lever came loose from the part it fits on the gearbox. I now fixed it myself, but it's not so nice to get stuck in the dark AFTER a service.

Hi Greenkick
Welcome to the Forum.
R10 000.00 is by no means small change and I also have a feeling something does not sound right.
Do you mind telling us exactly what has been done to the Lada which could justify a service fee like that ?
Also bear in mind that the Consumers Protection Act is already in place.
If Jan Pretorius did charge you that fee without giving you a written quotation in advance, he is pushing his luck very, very hard.

I would rather not say who it is at this stage as some of the guys might know him. I will contact him tomorrow and try and sort out.
Anyway, enough whining. This is a great website/forum. I am surely going to use this awesome tool.
Enjoying the LADA very much!

Hi Danie,
This was after I specifically asked for a quote and phoned to hear what has been done, and by that time the clutch kit was already installed etc.

If you know your way around a car you are going to save yourself loads of money in the future.
The only expensive item is the clutch that apparently had to be replaced but the rest seems ok.
You will probably need to bleed the brakes and clean the carb with carb cleaner - IF your Lada is a carb model.

If there was nothing wrong with your clutch and gear change on the way to Pretoria I would ask some serious questions! Correction >> I would spit FIRE! Probably too late now - but it is always good policy to ask for the used parts. Hope you get sorted Marius

Thanks Marius,
Great advise! My beauty is a carb model and appearently the carb was cleaned? I will see what I can do and study the manuals as I hopefully have got time before the next service, and could do is myself by then. I will ask for some help though.
Remember to fill up your LADA's before midnight - the petrol price is increasing with 54 cents!!!

Hi Danie, This was after I specifically asked for a quote and phoned to hear what has been done, and by that time the clutch kit was already installed etc. Hi Greenkick The new Consumers Protection Act simply does not allow things like that. I repeat - he is pushing his luck very, very hard, and it sounds like you do have very good reason to take this matter further. Danie

Hi Fangsingh
Mine looks exactly the same - even the same bullbar - without the spotlights though. I will post some pics for you to gaze upon.
I hail form the Wild West (Norht West) Province. See you are from Durbs. I'm a BIG SHARK fan by the way - also played for them a few years back.

If you got bad service somewhere do not hold back the name. If it was at Jan, he is NOT a specialist!

Jan IS a specialist: A specialist scammer. You got ripped off mate, and the new consumer act makes itself very clear on what happened to you today. I'll put 100 bucks on them not having done half what you paid for. Get some legal advice and go get him.
This kind of thing makes me the moer in.
Welcome to the forum mate, I'm just sorry your Lada experience started in this way.
Laters.

Just for clarification: the service was a third of the price I bought it for... Is this the norm? To Answer your question - unfortunately yes, that seems to be the norm. One of our female members recently reported already spending a total of about R80 000.00 on her Lada,( including purchase price) and the Lada still has problems. Another member took his Lada to the same Supplier, spend more than R10 000.00 for a "service, and the Lada did not last one day. I am aware of more incidents like this as well. What really concerns me, is rumors about owners who take their Ladas to a specific Supplier for a service , and soon after they get the cars back, they suddenly do experience complete new problems on their cars. Hi GK Welcome to the forum! Sorry your NIVA experience started on a sour note. To reiterate what has been said, you have been taken in by an unscrupulous person. You have the full protection of the CPA behind you AND numerous cases in point (on the forum) about the same dealer to take him on. Get legal assistance and take him on. regards Spikes

Hi Greenkick
Welcome to the Forum. Sorry to hear about your dealings with this "specialist" from Pretoria. It is a pity that prospective owners do not read the posts on this forum re Service good or bad before purchasing or sending a Niva to this dealer or any other one for that matter. This dealer has a reputation for this type of dealing and has no legal right to carry out work on your vehicle without your permission. As far as I am concerned he is a crook and this is from my own personnel dealings with him. Having said that, do your own servicing and what you do not know is freely available from the many members here who have the necessary experience to help you.
Ronnie
