Hi Damian
In the late 60`s early 70`s I was involved in presentation case manufacturing and we covered metal boxes with leatherette, velvet, vinyl etc and I know finding a suitable adhesive and being able to stretch these materials effectively and keep them glued there is beyond anyone without very expensive specialized equipment. Unsupported vinyl is the easiest to stretch with heat, but all vinyl has a memory and if it is subject to heat again like the sun, it will try to revert to it`s original state. a flat sheet. If the front face of the dash is still OK then make a new padded top that will fit and look as if it should be there. Someone posted a while ago a very nice dash which was done by a professional company but it was not cheap.

Hello All This is the response from the manufactures of Smooth-On. If somebody knows what the dash is made of then i can speak to them about it? Date: 10-12-2012 12:36:21 Name: Luis Pizarro: Hello Allen, I would not recommend this product to repair a cracked dashboard. What is the original dashboard made of? I may be able to recommend another material AMT stocks regularly. Best regards, Luis Pizarro Smooth-On, Inc. Regards, Allen Thanks for the feedback, The dash seems to consist of closed foam with a layer of textured plastic covering it. I do know that superglue does not melt it. Hope this helps Spikes

Smooth-on is a dead-end for us here is their response: Matching the existing dash material, likely a plastic vinyl, with our urethanes and getting a good bond with a similar texture will be very difficult. I think you will get better results from using a “dashboard repair kit”.
Sorry guys I tried.
Regards, Allen

Good Morning to all at LOCSA. Got the return 'phone call from the 'dashboard guy' with lots of apologies for his 'no show' (familly emergency....these things do happen). Have rescheduled for next monday afternoon. So I guess it's a case of .....watch this space. Regards to all at LOCSA. Keith and CERATOTH.

Hi Guys. Had a visit from Basie regarding the dashboard. The good news is that he thinks that it is repairable....first Lada dash he has worked on. They normally 'fix' older BMWs. The bad news is that the car has to go in to their workshops and the dashboard will have to come out. That's the bit that concerns me....all those switches, heater controls and whatevers. They never seem to go back properly if past experiences are anything to go on. He will get back to me with a price after the weekend and I guess that it will then be 'decision time' I'll post the quote as soon as I have it. Regards to all at LOCSA and drive safely over the weekend. Keith and CERATOTH

Thanks for the feedback, Keith. The surround around the vents and heater controls have very finicky catches, that easily break, or perhaps the auto-electrician had a very ham-handed assistant when they fitted my oil and Volt meter.

I can't understand why they do not prefer loose dashboard. It's much easier for them. And peace of mind for the owner if he remove the dashboard himself. Every time somebody did some job around the dashboard - extra switches and gauges, radio, aircon, alarm, etc.. we had bitter results - every time something is broken. We recon plenty of dashboards until Lada was still on the market and all of them were delivered loose. Rgds Ventz

Thanks Keith. I think with all that work, that dash is going to cost more than the Lada.

Juan, There is a company in Roodepoort that will recover the existing dash in vinyl after having filled the cracks, etc, dunno what they charge or what the quality of work is.
Also, either Bevan or Glenn in Hartebeespoort recovered their dash and door panels themselves and last I saw it about a month ago, it looked pretty good, unfortunately I only have their BBM pins, I will forward you tjeir phone numbers later today.

Good Evening Guys, and sorry for the delay in updating about the dashboard repair. To be honest I have now given up and 'will live with what I've got'. I am fed up with 'phoning for a price and being told that 'they' haven't worked it out yet but will get back to me later/tomorrow/by Friday/now-now etc. Even if 'they' did get back to me with a price which was acceptable I don't think that I would have sufficient trust in them to either now do the job properly or even get the dashboard (or CERATOTH !) back to me. So as far as I'm concerned it's back to filling the gaps with black silicon and giving it a squirt with dashboard 'back to black'. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

Sorry to hear that Keith.. It amazes me that even in today's world where so many people are struggling for work that customer service is more often then not, terrible. I am so happy I don't have any cracks in my dashboard. Hope it works out, Cheers, D
