Koos what do you mean "nice review" - it's a great review! "The tyres - Lada's own, branded Niva and doubtless highly specialised and expensive - are narrow and high in profile. We know, from experience with things like the Suzuki Jimny and my Samurai from the Bolivian special, that this makes sense, and that big and heavy off-roaders quickly suffer from some law of diminishing capability as more technology leads to more weight and then more systems to deal with it." >> just love this part ;D Regards Marius PS - just joking Koos

Hi Des
Thanks for that it was great. It is nice to know when you have an old vehicle that a new one looks exactly the same.

Hi Guys.
This looks recent. I was under the impression that they were not being built any more. Very glad that they are obviously still in production.
Minimum order of 500 for the RHD? Not a problem, right guys? Where are our membership numbers? If everybody orders 2, or maybe 3...
And what is that contraption on the tapper cover?
Spencer

Hi Spencer
The contraption is the reciever unit on the TBI models. The Niva is still going strong after all these years!

Hi All Found it courtesy of Difflocks site. Yes, it's really good to know that the Russians believe, when products work, "if it don't itch, don't scratch it". If more manufacturers had this approach, we would have less innovative rubbish(at OUR expense) on the market. I blows my mind when Manufacturers have a winner, they change it. Not that one minds asthetics changing. Anyway, enough dripping, suffice it to say, the Lada is the epitomy of "drie moere, 'n stuk blou draad en siedaar 'n boer het 'n boerdery".
On a more serious note, our hearts go out to our friends and those folk in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of crisis. Des

Maybe we should approach a car distributer like Imperial to look into making it possible. Everyone is pressed for cash right now, and cheaper cars are becoming very, very attractive right now. I think the Niva was marketed at the wrong part of the segment last time and the support was non-existant. If they could create a marketing strat to push the DIY nature of the Niva maybe it would be successful.
I'm no genius but it could be a way to make good money.

Hi all,
Very funny review indeed. Real fun. Some good remarks, some bad, as usual. Too many redundant political mockery from people who have no idea what was in the Eastern Bloc (probably the only source - James Bond 007) and the typical englishmen sarcasm for everything not english.... and the operational manual - of course, it was made like that to help UK customers like that.

Good point Ventz - those English people won't know a manual window winder if they see one - let alone how to operate one! ;D

Nothing wrong with Top Gear humor - anyone who often watch their programs will know that their is no political mockery involved.
All Top Gear programs are loaded with fun, good humor, and comments which makes a lot of sense - I definately don't think they are sarcastic about everything not English.
I also think we should think twice before we pass negative comments regarding British, American, (or whatever) humor at this website - after all, we have at least one member from Great Britain, members from other countries,, as well as many visitors from other countries at this website.
Hopefully they will not see the comments at this post as "typical South African"

Hi Danie I have been trying to work out who the member from The UK is. If you are referring to me I think after 37 years here I must now be classed as a South African. Ronnie

My sincere apologies if I offended anyone. The general idea was that in the modern world people drive cars with electronic gadgets. The Lada is probably the only "new" car with manual everything hence the "useful manual" (tongue in cheek) for those not in the know. I hope that makes sense. I still think the review was very much on the mark with a dash of typical good English sense of humour Kind regards Marius

You don't need to apologize Marius, you are right. I've got old factory operation manuals and they are different. They are thick and consist of some basic instructions but a lot of advices and pictures for repairs as well - how to adjust valves, how to replace front and back brakes, how to set timing and carb idling, electrical diagrams, even tightening torques. 80 pages. And why they change them to elementary pamphlet ..... What about the prominent English sense of humour - it's famous since Middle Ages. And why is famous - because is not clearly understandable from all other nations. Why French, Italian, Spanish, American, German, Scottish senses of humour are not prominent...? These people also have their little jokes.

As far as I know not a single car, ldv, truck etc. etc. supplier in South Africa currently supply any detailed instructions - like how to adjust valves, how to set timing, etc., to new buyers of their products. I think all car suppliers in the modern world tend to keep their little "secrets" for themselves -which obviously cause more profit to the Dealers. But apart from that - the modern cars are far more technically advanced, and are not that easy to work on - I think it makes sense rather to let the Dealers do all work needed anyway. As far as "secrets " (to make more profit) are concerned - I think that also applies to all three Lada spare part suppliers in South Africa, because I have never seen any of them giving advice to TBI (Throttle Body Injector) model owners at this, or the old LOCSA Forum - even when the owners were in desperate need of some detailed information ! As far as I am concerned -while all three Lada Spare Part Suppliers in South Africa seem keep their "little secrets" for themselves (for business reasons ), "labeling" any particular country by any of them -( like "typical Englishman sarcasm for everything not English" , "political mockery" , or whatever) - is simply uncalled for. And please - I am not trying to cause any problems at the Forum. All I am asking for, is - be reasonable and don't start "labeling" any country for whatever reason. I guess this topic must rather be closed for discussion. Danie

Hi Danie
I do not consider you to be causing problems. As I have said before, you and everybody else are welcome to air your opinion. After all that is what helps to keep the forum alive. I also agree with what you are saying.

On the subject of "humour" and people being offended: I thought this article was pretty good. You have to watch the video, it's a hoot. www.thedailymaverick.co.za/article/2011-03-01-ogilvy-should-grow-a-spineFrom my Anglicized view, I really love English Humour, like Monty Python and Black Adder. I find it fascinating how different population groups have such vast differences in what is perceived as "funny". It shows the fundamental differences we all have. And yet, we all have some "unbreakable" rules, like no killing, lying, stealing, love your parents and children etc. It's in realizing similarities like this that made me throw away the racism that I grew up with. Despite the fact that people are shits at times, we're all very much the same. I'm not preaching to you guys- what I'm trying to say in a round-a-bout way, is that you're all awesome. Diversity can be really fantastic. Peace.
