Last week I bought my Lada (1.7i, 2000 model, 82000km. The one with the TANK sticker). Very impressed with it so far. Just have a few questions:
The previous owner had a breather pipe installed in the rear diff in December. The pipe has come loose and the diff leaks quite a bit of oil while I am driving longer distances.
What type of oil should I use to top up the diff? Would it be a quick fix to get the breather and breather pipe fixed?
On another point should the Lada be able to start while in low range without pushing the clutch in? Mine wont, is the starter motor just too small or is my battery too flat?
While in low range my reverse gear is quite a lot faster than normal 4x4's, is there something wrong? According to my one friends dad my 1st gear low range does not brake enough while going downhill, he mentioned the compression may not be right. Is it the way the gear ratios are on all lada's or is something wrong?

Hi Hanno Looks like you are having some fun in the sun You can easily refit the breather pipe onto the outlet with a small hose clamp unless he did some other mod. If there is still some oil comming fromm the breather pipe then you have a problem. Let us know. Normally the oil in the diffs would be 85W90. As far as the starting goes - why would you want to do that? The starter is very expensive! The Lada you've got is not a diesel - so the gears should be a little "faster" that those 4x4's - if I understand you correctly. The torque is also different from a diesel - the Lada has less - but should be more than usefull in most conditions. If you feel the car is "running away" in 1st going downhill with your feet away from the clutch - it could be a syncro problem. The Lada should engine brake fairly ok even on very steep slopes - it just gets a bit noisy ;D Regards Marius

Hi Hanno As Marius says do not try to start the Niva in gear with the starter. It could end up a R2000 experience . I am sure your Niva is fine, make sure it idles at 750 to 800rpm and you should be fine going down hill under compression. If you think it is running away it is permissible to very gently control it with the brakes as long as you do not lock wheels. Ronnie

Thx guys for the quick help. I bought Castrol EPX 85W140 as there was no 80W90, is it ok to use it or should I rather wait till they have 80w90 in stock? How much does the brand matter? would mobil 80w90 be just as good? As for starting while in gear, it was my friends dad, who has a Hilux, that said it is supposed to be able to do it, I also thought it was a dumb idea (The Hilux got stuck a bit more than the Lada though ) If its a synchro problem, how serious would that be?

Hi Hanno.
The 85W140 is ok for the diffs aslong as the oil is not mixed with any other grade of oil.
Regards.

Hi Hanno
The 85W140 is actually formulated esp for diffs - so it would be a good replacement on all the boxes - except for the gearbox where you should use 80W90.
If you refer to Mobil 1 oils - it is very expensive but a top quality oil. I would not use any synthetic oils in the Lada's engine though. Brands as a rule don't realy matter.
IF it is the syncros >> they will eventually wear untill you have to replace them.
The price that Ronnie quoted for the starter is when you order it from overseas - if you want to buy local you might have to fork out R7000!
Regards Marius

The previous owner is not sure what grade of oil is currently in the diff. Would prob be best to drain everything and replace it with the 85w140 I think. Would it be ok if I top it up now with the 85w140 and drive 23km to strand where I will replace everything?

Hanno I would replace all the oils. Don't mix different grades as a rule but you should be fine for those 23kms Keep an eye on the breather pipe for an oil leak.
