Hi all Glycerine (Glycerol) is a by product of bio diesel and other petroleum products and has many uses - including as a lubricant and as preservative. Today it is used mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Interestingly Glycerine was historically used as an anti-freeze for automotive applications before being replaced by ethylene glycol, which has a lower freezing point. While, the minimum freezing point of a glycerol-water mixture is higher than an ethylene-glycol mixture, glycerol is not toxic and is being re-examined for use in automotive applications. Anyway one other interesting application for Glycerine is to preserve rubber components on a car. I see a lot of guys complaining about perished rubber boots etc. I have been using Glycerine with good effect for a good couple of years after being given this tip by my previous neighbour. The best news is you only have to do it once! It penetrates the rubber and keeps it from going brittle - applying a thin layer of the good stuff is more than enough - don't overdo it.
This is not the kind of tip you're going to hear from your local spares man! Give it a shot - woman have been using it for decades with amazing results Regards Marius

Hi Marius I can remember my Dad mixing glycerine into heavy duty(military surplus) hydraulic fluid which was then used as brake fluid in the Hudson Teraplane that he drove. regards Spikes
