Hi guys My name is Hanno Oostenbrink. I am on the verge of buying my first Lada. Want to ask you guys first if its a good buy. It is Francois van der Vyver's Lada (the one with the TANK sticker at the back). His asking price is R28 000 but he agreed to lower it. What do you guys think? (it has 81000km and seems to be in a good mechanical an esthetical condition)
General info about me: Studying BEng (mechanical) at stellenbosch. My home town is the Strand. This is my first vehicle with 4 wheels. (busy selling my DT125 motorcycle)
I heard of the forum from Francois van der Vyver.
Hope to hear from you guys and join you for a lekker off road session!

Welcome to the forum Hanno
I think it is a great buy. with you studying engineering it can only be fun! R28 000 sounds like a fair price. That car is in a nice condition.
Regards
Charles
p.s When the Niva bug firsts bites you get a very bad addiction!

Hi Hanno Welcome to the Forum - I hope you will be able to find a Lada in good condition ! I definately do not know everything about Ladas, but to my mind you do need to look at certain things which could prevent a lot of disappointment in future. I will pass some comments in this regard later during this weekend. Regards Danie P.S. Oh - do you really want to sell your motorcycle .

Hi Hanno Just a couple of things which might be worthwhile having a look at while you are shopping around for a Lada: Engine: 1. Remove the radiator cap and look at the water level, as well as the absence of Anti Freeze in the water. A lack of anti freeze means the waterpump has not been lubricated properly, and that you might need to replace the waterpump in the near future. If the water level is low, look out for a leak at the waterpump as well. 2. Remove the dipstick and look at the oil level, as well as the quality of the oil on the dipstick. If the level is low or the quality of the oil is poor - watch out ! 3.The engine must be started and switched off a couple of times to make sure the starter is in good condition. Transmission 1. You do need to get under the car and have a close look at oil leaks at both diffs, gearbox, and transfer box. If things do not look too well, reconsider the price, or rather stay away. Bad oil leaks could be an indication of low oil levels inside the diffs, transfer box and gearbox, as well as worn gears and bearings as well. 2. Have a look at the Gearlevers - inside the cabin. The High / Low speed (second longest) gearlever at the back should be shifted easily backwards and forwards when the car is stationary. Have a close look at the position of the Transfer Lock gearlever, (the very short gearlever at the center) when you get into the car. If you do find the gearlever being shifted in the "back" position - ask the owner if he normally drives the Lada with the gearlever in this position. If he says "yes" - it means the car has been driven around while the transfer Box has been locked all the time, and the complete drivetrain has been submitted to abnormal stress for quite some time . Rather stay away and look for another Lada. The Transfer Lock Gearlever is the very short one which is at the center -see pic below. It always has to be in the "Forward" position during normal driving conditions: (Thanks to Darryn for allowing me to borrow the pic . ) Also make sure that this gearlever can be engaged and disengaged. You also have to take the car for a test drive, and listen carefully if you can hear any strange gearbox, diff, or transfer box noises. Use all gears as much as you can, and make sure the gearlever does not jump out at any gear. If it does, rather think twice about the car's selling price - and / or refer back to this forum. Don't worry if you hear a slight whining noise coming from the Transfer Box - that's normal. Watch out for abnormal steering play - if you do find any abnormal play, the steering box could be worn or damaged. Also look out for cracks near the three bolts where the steering box is mounted(see pic below) - behind the front wheel (drivers side). If you do find any cracks, it means the Lada has most probably been abused by the owner. The three bolts which holds the steering box in place can be seen at the black painted area: (Charles I hope you do not mind if I use your pic here) Also look for cracks behind the front wheel on the left. This pic (below) shows the "swivel" , bolted with two bolts to the chassis - inside the engine bay, which could cause chassis cracks on the left side of the vehicle. If any chassis cracks can be found at the Steering box area, the chance is almost 100% that cracks will be found on this side as well. Cracks will be more visible if you have a look at the chassis from the outside (behind the front wheel at the left: If you do need more advice, please let us know. Regards Danie

There are only two reasons why somebody would leave the diff lock engaged for "normal road" driving. 1. Ignoring the idiot light (in return being an idiot) 2. or more likely - lost drive on the allready stuffed front diff and had to engage to get drive through on the back diff.
This will cause major wear and tear on the driveline components and the tyres.

Very nice Niva, I would not let the scoop bother me, I have seen much worse. Perhaps it is the air intake for the turbo ;D

Forgot to mention, turbo fitted, no spare wheel in bonnet, spare wheel is cramped up in the boot, the spare wheel is actually the same wheels on lada with the same rim, no space for backboard, this is sitting on the seat, back seats are original, front seats are bucket racing seats.

Gecko, I think I am rather going with my initial choice, have had a look at it and it is in excellent condition. I have also made an agreement with the owner for a good price I can afford. (R28000 is just above what I can afford right now). Seems like a great Niva though - Hope you get someone to swap you those rims.
If all goes to plan I will have my Lada by the weekend, very excited. Thx again for all the help guys!
