Sounds like something similar to what once happened to me. Check if all 4 of the studs that hold the gearbox doughnut to the transfer case input flange are still there.
I found out the hard way that they vibrate loose and fall out. They get stuck between the high/low selecter shaft and one of the drive shafts can actually bend the selecter shaft.
Once there is only one stud left the transfer case will start jumping around as there will be NO ALIGNMENT between the gearbox and the transfer case.

Well that's bad news Bob.
Hopefully the diff is not cracked as well.........and hopefully the little beast will be back on the road soon.

Thanks for the warning about the studs Ari - checking them regularly definately make sence.

The older Landy's got a similar problem due to people work on the props and then damage the original bolts and nuts. They then replace them with ordinary bolts and nuts. All drive shafts/ couplings should have ni-lock nuts or cleeve nuts so that they can not vibrate loose and fall out then driving.
Please make sure that all props/couplings are fitted with ni-lock nuts or cleeve nuts.

Ari if I do understand you correctly, it sounds if the studs itself came loose - not the nuts ?

Danie, it is definitly bolts and not studs holding the flex coupling onto the input flange of the transfer. It is a M12x1.25 and according to the workshop manual, the torque setting on this specific bolts are 57.8 - 71.5 N-m.

After those bolts/studs fell out I did not know what they were or looked like. So I removed the transfer case as the H/L shaft was bent and had to be replaced and checked the size of the holes in the gearbox output shaft where it bolts onto the transfer case input flange. They are M6. So I found 4 M6 bolts and made them shorter until I could wriggle the in and tighten them with a 13 spanner.

parts are ok, they all have proven to be cheap so far, My alloy FRT diff housing is buggered, the bearings are all overheated and/or fallen apart but the diff itself looks salvageable with a bit of deburring. I could put the rear diff centre in the front and whack a LSD in the back, they are only 600 AUD. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Glad to hear that you managed to find a diff housing, Bob.
About three years ago I bought many spares - including a complete front diff, from a previous Lada owner. .The diff has been stripped, and rebuilt by myself - very easy to work on .
The original front diff on my Lada developed a serious oil leak at one of the sideshaft oil seals by time, and also started making a knocking noise. So when I started stripping my Lada for a proper rebuild a while ago, I also stripped the front diff........just to discover that the one sideshaft bearing had collapsed - and obviously caused the knocking noise.........so I guess the front diff was on the brink of an "explosion" as well.
Fortunately the spare diff was sitting on the shelf in my garage.........now I just have to start rebuilding the original one.............
Regards
Danie
