Hi Guys
A happy new year to all on the forum. My the new year just bring so much more fun.
After my return from a short break, I noticed the seal on the back diff is leaking. This is the seal for the pinion. I know the local mechanic in Kareedouw ordered 3 for me last time, but since then the business changed hands. Does anybody know what the dimensions of this seal is so that the new owner can check if he still has the remaining 2.
The existing seal was installed 2 years ago. Is that about the right for the lifespan or could there be movement on the pinion. Have studied the manual and wonder if It was set up correctly the first time.
Regards
Hein

Welcome back Hein I guess anything is possible - but my gut says it is a very unlikely to leak so soon. Hopefully someone can help you with the dimensions. Regards Marius

Hi Hein I don`t know the size of that seal but I got 2 after market ones for the rear of the gearbox. I managed to ruin one putting it in and the second one was leaking after 1 day. I ordered a genuine one from ventz and it is still perfect. the small premium you pay for genuine is justified as far as I am concerned. Ronnie

Hi Hein One thing I should have said to you re play on the shaft. The rear output shaft on my transfer case has about 2mm of play and the genuine seal does not leak Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
Yes, it makes sence to get genuine as I do not want to have a broken diff.
I studied the manual on how to setup the torque on the pinion nut and I'm a bit worried about the spacer sleave between the two bearings. Should I also get a new one or only if I'm going to replace bearings. I dont want play between the crown wheel and pinion.

Hi Hein
If you are only replacing the seal I don`t think you need to replace anything else. If you were replacing the bearings you may need to use the correct size of adjusting ring. There again if you mike the old and new bearings and they are identical I don`t think you would need to do any adjustment. I am no expert on diffs so hopefully someone else will advise you.

Hi all,
I haven't been on the forum recently. Happy New year to everyone. I wish safe driving with Nivas and as much as possible less modifications.
Regarding oil seals, I already wrote - no one seal is standard size and replaceable, except the rear crankshaft oil seal.

Thanks Marius,
It will be only short break, one lazy week. Just to get the kids out of home because they are so bored with this long vacation. I believe the real pleasure and fun will be June-July somewhere to the north.
