Hi there. I'm new to this site and also a new Lada owner. I just bought a Lada Niva 1.7 (carburetor). I'm not sure of the year as I'm waiting for the registration papers. The piston head is cracked somewhere. I'm not sure if something else might be wrong with the engine after it has been standing for 5 years. So I might just put in a new little diesel engine. The clutch needs to be re-done. Then there is various rubbers that needs replacing. Other than that it looks in good nick and I can not wait to start with the fun. I'm new to fixing anything on cars but I am going to try and do as much as possible on the repair side as to get to know the Lada better. So beware, I am probably going to fire away a lot of questions. Thank you, Jaco Myburgh P.S. I found the LOCSA site by Googling around for answers to my questions. There is a lot of excellent info here and I have barely started going through the threads.

Hi Jaco Warm welcome to the forum. Looks like you are a little bit in the deep end but fortunately there are many fellow members that would gladly help. Be sure to download the manuals from our Home Page (see Technical Page). Trying to solve the problems yourself is the best way to do it and you will also save a small fortune in the process. There is no better way to get to know your lada better Regards Marius

Well, after great excitement on getting the Lada running the timing chain tensioner failed. Lots of trouble a little spring can cause. Well, actually still looking if it is only the spring that failed, but I'm back to square one non the less. The happy times will have to be put aside for a bit.

Hi Marius and all, The long of the short is I had the timing chain tensioner failing on me. All the valves got bent, but luckily no damage to the head. She is running again but I need to sort out some noise that is coming from timing chain area again. I hope to get that done in the morrow. Here is a new pic with the matt black stock rims and the 215-65-16 tires I have put on.

Hi Jaco
It makes the world of difference when you paint those rims - the "standard" colour was a bad choice. There are so many things that can cause engine noise - but I would start at the timing itself. It could be pinging that you hear.

I painted my rims gloss black and it look very good with the mud tyres. I'm skaam that i haven't posted a pic of RPG yet after the (very partial) restoration.
Very nice Jaco.

Thank you for the compliments guys. I'm very much in an experiment stage. So if things work out in some way on the first go I'm very happy. This brings me to the next point...
I have had some problems with the "timing chain-tensioner-guide-...". The noise I was talking about is indeed coming from it. I'm still looking at this. Ventz has been very helpful in brainstorming with me as to what might be the problem. It's hard doing this over long distances but there is some ideas. As he is a member of this forum I'd like to thank him on the forum for his prompt response and willingness to help. I hope this is permitted.
In short, the noise is made by a loose timing chain. Either the timing chain is stretched or the new tensioner is not working properly (which I doubt) or the chain damper and/or human error.
In any case, I had some fun playing around doing some spray work on some engine components. It is a pleasing experience. As I think/hope it is for all of you. ;D
Regards,
Jaco

Spraying engine components? it's one of the most fulfilling things in life. Fact. The day I resprayed my aircleaner, tappet cover and exhaust manifold was a good day indeed. That, along with a spotlessly clean engine, is happiness.
