Hi guys I'm having problems with my little niva and would like to know where I could have this sorted out in the Durban area or even ideas how to sort it out by myself, if possible. I would prefer to have the major work done by a good repair company/man The problems that I having are as follows: - The car shudders in first and second
- Pops out of 3rd
- Lots of play in steering wheel
- Engine cuts out when cold and I live in Durban .
Any advise will be welcomed. Thanks guys J

Hi Jakes I am sure you will get lots of advice The car shudders in first and second >> it could be more serious but I found it helps a lot when you bleed the system with new fluid on a regular basis. Pops out of 3rd >> Most probably a worn selector fork or worn syncro. Lots of play in the steering wheel >> You can adjust play on the steering box. Engine cuts out when cold >> Probably a dirty carb. Chris Swales Motors in Pinetown is probably a good bet - or Ventz in PMburg. locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=12Regards Marius

Thanks Marius, I appreciate the help. I will try Chris Swales Motors in Pinetown seeing it fairly close to where I live.

Pleasure Jakes.
Before anybody starts working on your car - make sure to get a quote first.

Hi Jakes
Welcome to the forum. Marius has pretty well answered your queries. One thing on the cold running problem make sure the choke is adjusted properly so that when your choke is out a small amount it increases the revs so it stays running. There is a separate adjustment for that.

My biggest concern at the moment is the shuddering and the popping out of 3rd gear. It seems relatively simple to repair with the advise given... I just hope it is.
If you guys can think of any other problems that it might be, I would appreciate it.

Hi Jakes I can give you a bleaker answer - like your steering box is shot and you are screwed - but I won't do that to you ;D Troubleshoot from the top - and then go down One more thing to remember - the engine is not happy when cold - you always need to start it with the choke and keep it running for a while. Regards Marius

Thanks Marius. The rain has been relentless here in Durban recently, so I haven't managed to get a good look at it yet. Thanks for the advise though. My mechanical skills are very limited to say the least, so like I said before, any advise is welcomed

Hi Jakes
With reference to my comment elsewhere regarding the mechanic in Pinetown - I seem to have misplaced his cell no., but I will try to get hold of him during this week. He has got a very good knowledge about Ladas, and works on cars after hours at home.
Only problem is that he is not always available due to the fact that he might be fully booked (after hours).
It might be worthwhile getting a quote from him, as well as the names mentioned above...
