Hi everyone, Ive just bought myself a 1992 lada niva and we are having trouble starting it. It turns over and eventually kicks into life but the moment we put our foot on the accelerator the car dies. The manual says to start the car and drive off straight away but that is impossible.
Once we are driving along it seems to lose power momentarily and then takes off again, sometimes backfiring, although this is not very often.
I am a solo mum and my concern is going to a mechanic who will try and fool me into getting a lot of unecessary work done, which has happened to me in the past with other cars.
I was thinking spark plugs or a dirty filter but have no idea where to even start.
Your help would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

Hi Sjanej
Appart from needing a good service like Spikes suggested - it also sounds like a dirty carburator to me. You need to buy some carburator cleaner from a spares shop like Midas. Follow the instructions on the can to the letter and hopefully that will resolve your issues.
Carb cleaner is always handy to have around.
Do not hesitate to ask questions if you are not sure what to do - or you do not know your way around the engine.
Regards Marius

As a Lada Niva owner you will have to learn the basics on how to service a car - it is real easy to do and it will save you a small fortune and you won't have to deal with sharks. Ask your friends and family if they know a good mechanic in the area - for the bigger jobs. You might get a little dirty in the process but you will feel great when the job is done Regards Marius PS - protect your hands with some surgical gloves you can buy cheaply from any chemist.

Thanks everyone, have been looking at the manuals so will download them and have a good read. I live on an island in Tasmania, Australia so parts will need to be shipped in but I am thinking I will have to learn to do the basics myself as a standard service here is $250

At least two other members are from Australia and they both know their way around a Lada - perhaps you can PM them in this regard?
bobbyd and Andy from lada & korean parts

Hi Sjanej
Before you do any thing make sure you have set the basics. Valve clearance and to do this properly you need wide feeler gauges. Then set the timing before moving on to plugs, and petrol filter.I agree with Marius about the carburettor and would also take out the jets and make sure they are clean. Pay attention to the idle jet. It will also pay to check the cylinder compressions. If you do not have a timing light and a compression tester it would be worth while investing in them as they will last a life time and SHOULD not be expensive. I also seem to remember that there is 1 member of the Australian Lada club who lives in Tasmania.

Hi Sjanej
You do not say wither the problem is with the engine hot or cold or both. If it is only with the engine cold check the choke is operating properly.

Ronnie Hi Ronnie The trouble starting is usually when cold, once we get to town, about 15 minutes drive, she starts fine for the return trip if we were only there for a short time. The losing power is hot and cold and happens randomly.

sjanej, join/jump on the aussie forum which is below in my sig, there is a Niva guy down your way, Randell and he is a Niva veteran and moves in Niva circles. Parts are cheap and can be posted by Andy in Bris down to you. Keep in touch. Bob

Hi Sjanej
When it is random and you are not there it is not so easy. Make sure all the basics are correct first and let us know if there is a difference. Get in touch with the Aussie Club as suggested by Bob and hopefully the Tasmanian member is close by.

Hi all, feeling really stupid right now, just discovered my lada has a choke!!!! My manual says nothing about a choke and I was even told ladas are chokeless. However, I saw what I thought was a choke and tried it the other day but it didnt move so ignored it. Tried it again this morning and it must have been stuck as I was able to pull it out and the car started straight away. Still need to do some basic maintenance but the starting wont be a problem now.
