Hi All
As I have never been happy with the idling of the carb I decieded to check the compression pressures. This is the results
cyl 1 960 kpa
cyl 2 1000 kpa
cyl 3 975 kpa
cyl 4 1000kpa
any comments please

Hi Ronnie Various references suggest that 1700 pressure should be >1000Kpa. S

Hi Ronnie,
Not bad, not bad at all for a car 10 years old.
By catalogue specifications the pressure should be 9.3 bars for 1700 ccm. Don't trust them, even now your pressure is more then in new engine.
When we inspected new cars for some suspisions, the pressure easy reach 12 bars (1.2 MPa).

Hi Ventz and Spikes
Thanks for your reasurance, I can only assume the poor idle is the carb which I do not like. The one on Ari`s was the same.

Hallo Ronnie.
See if the o-ring on the idle mixture adjusting screw is not broken or damaged. Othervise just turn the screw 1/2 turn more openso that enought feul can go thrue for a smoother idling. That screw is not an air screw but an idling mixture adjusting screw. My vehicle idles on 850rpm evenly when hot and got no problems with the carb except a lack of wooma.
Regards.

Hi Hercules
I have already checked that o ring and it is in good condition. The mixture screw is out at the moment by five and a half turns and it does not run smoothly.I have just tried changing the plugs and there is no difference ( I did not expect any ). the old plugs are light brown in colour so the mixture is not rich. The further out you turn the screw the faster the motor runs. All the passages in the carb appear to be clear as I have put carb cleaner through them all. The Lada is not underpowered, as soon as the second choke opens it will accelerate to 130 with ease.

I have always had and told other Niva guys the idle mixture screw should be ou t 2 1/2 turns I have tried right in and 8 turns out, there was no difference in power but the fuel economy was shocking at 8 turns, SHOCKING. Factory rec for 1600 is 2 1/2 turns out

Hi All.
My idle srew is 3 turns open and run well. What I mean with lack of power is that the Solex is not a performance carb. The second second choke can give more more wooma but are rather mild. my Lada doing 140km/h easily.
I drove once a Lada with a 32/36 weber on and what a difference. The second choke is beautiful and the power it gives is a big difference from the solex. The idling were also miles better than that of the solex aswell as starting when hot.
The 32/36 weber is the carb that was used on the 1600 Sport and XR3 Escort.
Regards.

Hi Hercules
I agree fully with what you say. The Webber is a superior carb. The idle on this Lada and on Ari`s Lada when it was new leaves a lot to be desired.

Hi guys
I am sure that the Weber gives a lot more power - but as far as I know the Weber cannot compete with the Solex in serious off road conditions with steep ups and downs.
>>EDIT>> But then again who is doing serious off road like that on a regular basis anyway?

well marius I do a lot of serious off roading, THE WEBER GUYS GIVE YOU AN ADJUSTMENT SETTING YOU DO TO YOUR FLOATS FOR HEAVY OFF ROAD AND 4X4 AS USED IN SOME OLDER JEEPS ETC. NO PROBLEMS AS MOST OF THE TIME YOU ARE GIVING IT GAS TO VOOMA UP AND THROUGH, THE BUMPS DONT REALLY BOTHER MUCH AS LONG AS YOPU DRIVE LIKE A MAN AND NOT A IDIOT. LOL
