Hi Ronnie
I went back home earlier today and on my way back I visited the Carb and Service centre in Pinetown.
The firm is called Pinetown Carburetor & Service Centre, and I spoke to a guy called Rynhard.
He told me he will be able to supply any jet for the Weber - if he does not have the correct size jets in stock, he will be able to get it for you.
He also told me that should you not be able to tell him what size jets you need, he will be able to work out exactly what sizes you need for the Lada. All he needs to know, is what model Weber the carb is, and what the engine capacity is (1700cc obviously).
He also told me he could do the jet installations, and all settings on the carb to suit the Lada, and at the worse price scenario, the cost will not exceed R800.00 . That price includes the jets, but does not include costs "if the float is faulty" - whatever it means.
Contact details of Pinetown Carburetor & Service Centre : 031 7017910 , or 031 7028886

Hi All. Progress report.
Today there has been good progress. The broken water connection arrived from Mike and has been fitted. Thanks Mike. I went into the carb and service center in Scotburgh today, as both the instructions i had plus the ones from Spikes and information from Mike indicated the idle jets were too small. Both barrels have idle jets, and the 1600 calls for primary .55 secondary .45 My weber has P .45 S .45. I managed to get a .60 idle jet which I fitted to the primary barrel. The Lada now idles the way it should with the mixture screw between 2 and 3 turns out. with the .45 jet the mixture screw was out 8 turns and was not idling right. If I can get my hands on a .50 for the primary and a .50 for the secondary I would like to try that as the minimum idle speed I can get is 900rpm which indicates the idle jets are a little bit big. Next is to alter the air filter to suit the weber then try it on the road.

ronnie 900 rpm is the range for the 32/36 carb if you want top end power if you change to .50 jet it will only drop to 750-800rpm roughly but will effect top torque dramatically as i have had that problem before. that is why when i go off road i change my jets to larger setting and for town driving smaller. as mentioned drill out air valves to compensate for richness. a co test should confirm that you are running rich or start car run idle for 2 min and check spark plugs. rich tan colour indicates correct and dark black indicates rich. if using new spark plugs idle for 10 mins. before test clean spark plugs if possible.

ronnie that is fine then leave at 900 rpm or set to 1000 rpm but will need to make leaner or change in winter. until solenoid sorted

Hi Mike
I will check the plugs tomorrow. I changed the plugs a couple of weeks ago and the ones that came out were a nice light brown. This was with the Solex. I will not drill out the Air correction jets until I have spare ones as once drilled ---------------- thats it.

Hi Guys
I have been reading through all the comments and I'm getting a bit worried now.
As soon as I get my Lada back I will be fitting a 1700 Solex on my 1600 Lada. I have not changed any of the jets. I see that there is a difference in setup on the weber between 1600 and 1700, will I also experience all these problems or would the air mixture screw sort this out. Is there different jets available for the Solex carb?

Hi Hein I think you should be able to get jets for the solex. As far as the jet sizes for the Weber go there is none that I can find listed for the 1700 . If you look at the recommended sizes for the 1600 you will have a wide choice as to what sizes to use as every site is different and I have no doubt they all must work, as the person posting them must be happy. Try the 1700 carb and see what happens. If the idle jet is too lean the mixture screw will be many turns out to get an even idle. Ronnie

Hi,
I've got two brand new 1600 carburettors for sale. Old stock. If somebody is interested - price R1500. Just for info, the price which CMH asks for 1700 carb in September 2002 was R4993.58 + VAT.

Hi All The weber is now finished and running very nicely. The idle is nice and even with no hesitation when coming of idle. I have only had it out on a short run and it accelerates nicely. I can`t give any comparison with the Solex until I have done some decent Kilometers. I have not had a chance to check the plugs but will when I have a chance. Here is 2 pictures to look at. Ronnie

Hi Hercules and All
Hercules, I have addressed this to you as you were involved with weber carbs at one time. I refer to the problem of the weber flooding when used on steep slopes. I have compared the Russian Solex very closely with the Weber 32 / 36 DGAV (Aqua / water choke) that i have. I assume the DGV And the DGEV (electric choke) will be the same. I can see no reason as to why the Weber will flood and the Solex won`t as both Carbs have the float chamber vented to the top of the cover. Also , in both cases the air correction jets are vented via separate vents to the top of the cover. Was the flooding due to a different design at that time?.

Hi Ronnie.
The reason the Weber did flood when go down hill and run out of petrol when going uphill is the way the float is situated. The Weber float sit inline with the vehicle and will stay open while going downhill and close off when going uphill. The Solex float sit across the vehicle and will only flood if going to long on a side slope.
Hope I make any sense.
Regards.

Hi Hercules
Now that I have had a chance to look at the 2 carbs I understand the problem with the flooding on hills. I have only had the Niva out locally and I think the weber has more torque as it pulls up the steep hill by us better than it did before. This may not be a fair statement though as the Solex was not running right when I took it off. One interesting thing ,the idle jet on the Weber is the only jet in use up to 2500rpm only then does the main jet take over. There is a wealth of information on the net regarding Weber carbs, and how to set them and how to tell what jets are too big or too small.
