But the valves damaged the tops of their pistons. You can see where the valves banged a new notch into the piston. Although, it looks like this has happened before- look at piston 4, that notch has doesn't look as new. The combustion chambers are full of carbon deposits- is this OK for an old engine? I'm gonna wait for a while until I get money, and then I'll recon the whole head- with genuine parts (I hope you're smiling Ventz!). I got the bolt out with a normal hex profile 12mm socket bought over the counter at Midas. I tried to weld along the sides at the bottom but the sides of the socket kept being gauged away (it was a funny angle). So I put the amps nice and high, and plug welded the socket from the top. This did the trick really well. I am very relieved that the head is off and I can now carry on. There don't seem to be any cracks in the head (well not near the valves, but there is a crack where someone seems to have tried to lever something out on the top of the head, but I'm not sure it's that serious. Let me know if I'm mistaken. OK- bye.

Well, I'm in two minds whether I should do it myself. I can make a good valve spring compressing tool at the workshop, so getting the valves in and out shouldn't be a problem. I'm just not sure how much of a wild ride I'm in for when it comes to putting in valve seats and guides... Should I just get a specialist to do it?

Hi Darryn
Glad to see you have managed to get the head off at last. If you want my twopence worth send the head to a specialist who someone can recommend to you.

Hi Darryn
Now that the head is off, if you are in a position to turn the motor by hand put some oil in the bores and then turn the pistons up and down to push any dirt to the top so you can clean it. Then lightly oil the bores and cover them with a clean rag.

Hi Darryn
I have just had a look at the block again, first of all put rags in the bores and clean the block first before you clean them with oil etc.

Thanks, I'll do that- but what about the new notches in the pistons? Will those not interfere with the valves? I just don't want to have to take the pistons out...

Hi Darryn
The pistons should be ok. and you are right , you dont want to take the pistons out. That IS a mission.
Ari
PS I would fix the head myself, its the only way to learn things, the manual is very helpful in this regard.

Hi Darryn and Ari.
If the guides need to be replaced give the work to a specialist. Grinding in new valves by hand can be a tedious job and one I will gladly pay someone to do.

Hi Darryn.
I did my head 2years ago. I wil sent the head in again if I get this type of breakage again. Rather let a specialist press in the new guides and recut and lap the valvse for a proper seating and sealing. The head also require a sceem to ensure that the head is flat. According to the photo, it look if the head did not seal properly in front of no 1 piston. Also look out for burn places around the pistons on the head, specially no 4, which might require welding.
As Ronnie suggest, clean the bores and cover them. Also, I will flatten the burrs on the pistons caused by the valves as the piston come very close to the valves as they open and can damaged the new valves again.
Al the best with the repairs and don't be in a hurry. Take your time and do the repairs properly as you do not want to redo it again in the near future.
Regards.

Hi Darryn,
Check the pistons for minor cracks due to the impact. If not any, better do not touch the pistons more. The new scratches should be not so deep and they are dents only; they won't affect the new valves.
I can fix your head if you wish, did it numerous times. Check how much is economy post to my place.

Send it by economy post to my address if you wish. Anyway you will need spares which I have to send by couriers. Now they will be fitted on the head. I'll be busy 1-2 days and will send it back. I can't quote it totally before to inspect it but you have my parts quotation in your e-mail inbox.

I saw an article from a guy who skimmed 1mm off the head of his Niva engine. He says he doesn't have proof of how this has improved his performance but says he can feel it. How much would skimming the head help with increasing compression? 1mm does not seem like a hell of a lot, but I'm no expert.
Any facts gentlemen?

Hi Darryn
After reading the article it obviously works. I am like you I thought 1mm was a lot to remove.

Hi Darryn.
I did removed 0.5mm from the Lada head when I recondition which were the minimum I could removed the get the head flat. The head was previously done before I bought the vehicle, and is not sure how much were removed.
It did make a huge difference after the head was recondition with plenty of power and grunt. The only problem is that the valves get very close to the pistons.
Regards.
Hercules.

I was a bit worried about the valves getting quite close to the pistons.

Im sure the gas flow and powder coat will make a huge diffrence. Mike have you run your lada with a diffrent carb? What is the fuel consumption with the 38?

hi Charles always been running with the 38 dgas, all i do is change the jets from a 36 setting average around 8km/lt but on heavy foot around 6km/lt. with the 38 jets fitted. which i only use when i go heavy off road i get 4-6lt/km but loads of vooma. Hence why i gas flowed and ported with power coating.
