Hi all, so im sick and tired of my lada standing because i cant find anyone who will fix my gearbox and clutch. i am really thinking of just dropping in another engine and box. i just wanted to see if anybody had advise on the best engine and box? from what i have found out, you can use any engine and gearbox that will fit the engine bay and just new mounts need to be made. as far as the transfercase goes, theres just a shaft that needs to be made up...i will not be doing this myself as i am not very good with this kind of stuff, so ill leave it up to someone better equipt
any help or suggestions would really help.
thanks jarrod

Best advice is have your gearbox repaired. Clutch you can get at midas. Stick with the lada engine.

I aggree with Charles
Many people try that but few succeed - it involves a lot more than a simple swop.
What happened when you drove it the first time? Did you ever take it for a test drive?
I am sure a guy like Mike that lives on your doorstep would be glad to help.
Regards Marius

cool thanks for the advise. yip i did test drive it and it drove alright, the gearbox started giving problems after a outing in the dunes, but i didnt know about over filling the gearbox back then so that might have had something to do with it. iv found a guy who is coming on monday to give me a quote to fix the gearbox and the clutch, so holding thumbs

Hi Jarrod
I don't think overfill would have cured the problem - was there a noise - or did it jump out of gear or what?
PS - Make absalutely sure the guy who is giving the qoute has some experience with Ladas.

Hi Jarrod
I also thought about an engine swap (to diesel) at one stage, but having considered the pros and cons, I agree with the comments above- rather stick to the original engine.
It also makes sense rather to repair the gearbox - if you buy another one "in good condition" you could easily buy yourself a can of worms...........

Conversions cost thousand and are never perfect. And it will cost double what you get quoted!

Don't do that. It will be endless troubles. Where are you? I can repair your gearbox for 1 day. Engine - a few days due to use of sublet work. It wont be cheep of course, but much less than all these modifications.

There are lots . the best is just to look a bit around on Locsa or use the seach engine on the bottom of the page to query something specific.

hi jarrod i sent you a message call me on my cell 0843374919 lets see what i can do to help. i have a second hand gearbox available at mo but attched to spare part lada. clutch easy to sort out we can overhaul at good price from ferrodo, you might need transfer case looked at. the last guy that i had to repair his gearbox wich resulted in damaging his transfer box and fron diff costed him +/- 16000,00 but that was with purchasing a reconditioned gearbox. DONT DO CONVERSON UNLESS YOU WANT REAR WHEEL DRIVE ONLY AND YOU WILL STILL HAVE ISSUES.

Ok Jarrod Next question Did you check the oil level in the gearbox? If you haven't done so - check all the other boxes. The noise can be from the bearings - but noise can be deceptive - it can be something else - but first check the oil and let us know. Regards Marius

MARIUS HI 9X OUT OF TEN THE SMALL SHAFT BEARING GOES FIRST WITH LACK OF OIL THE EFFECTS MAIN BEARING RESULTING IN LAY SHAFT DAMAGE FOLLOWED BY TRANSFER BOX BEARING SEAL THEN TRANSFER BOX BEARING AND SO FORTH. SO THE NOISE CAN COME FROM GEARBOX ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO FRONT DIFF. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN A WORSE CASE STUDY

AND OH YES LOW OIL LEVELS WILL RESULT IN MORE NOISE BUT YOU WILL KNOW WHEN THE BEARINGS ARE SHOT ...INTERMITTENTLY YOUR GEARS DON'T CHANGE AND DRIVE TRAIN DOES NOT ROTATE. WHEN YOU HIT THIS STAGE IT'S AN ENTIRE DRIVE TRAIN OVERHAUL. JUST LIKE A HAD TO DO FOR A CHAP CALLED PAOLO IN STELLENBOSCH. AND AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE IS NO ONE IN CAPE TOWN BESIDES ITALSUD, MYSELF AND A CHAP IN BEAUFORD WEST WHO ARE CONSIDERED EXPERTS IN LADAS. JUST PEOPLE WHO CLAIM THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING BUT TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE. SO BE VERY CAREFUL. WHERE DO YOU STAY CALL ME. I'M SURE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I CAN HELP YOU. EVEN IF WE TAKE OUT THE GEARBOX AT YOUR PLACE.

Hi Jarrod
Just some advice - I would advice you rather to get your gearbox stripped (by Mike or any reputable specialist), and get it repaired properly. If you do buy any other gearbox "in good condition" you might be sitting with just another can of worms in the near future.
Also, I am sure that Mike will be more than happy to issue a guarantee on his workmanship.
Regards
Danie

yes i plan to do just that, iv learned the hard way by doing half jobs on my bikes before, so now i know to rather play things safe, the idea behind finding another gear box is so i can have a spare, what ever box i find i will have it stripped and checked as well. mike, if you open a shop in the area Ill def be a regular, if the price is not to steep ofc as far as parts go mike, all i know is the clutch( was quoted R1500) and then R3000 for the gearbox... thats all i know, as i said before im not very good with motors and esp cars.offroad bikes and quads are more my thing ;D thanx Jarrod

Hi Jarrod
Please just do yourself a favour and stay away from conversions. Conversions almost always ends in tears and a half finished project getting sold due to all the problems involved. Unless you have lots of money to spend.

Jarrod - sorry it might appear that I'm pimping Mike here - but Jan is probably not going to help you unless you courier him the GB. The whole process will cost you a fortune - so you might as well save a little by letting Mike do the job for you.
Regards Marius
PS - I missed the quotes which sounds very reasonable.

Jarrod as far as possible support your local guys. Jan isn't even intrested in joining the forum. from what I can understand, Mike is one of the best lada guys around. So you are very lucky to have someone like that closeby.

OK TO SETTLE THINGS QUICK I HAVE A HUNCH THAT LADA CENTURION IS BELLY UP AND JAN IS DOING THINGS ON THE BACK END.(note no proof just a hunch) and clutch overhaul is cheaper than new and stronger. if you wanna save a few bucks.
Marius AND OTHER GUYS THANXS FOR THE INPUT AND POSITIVE FEED BACK I DO NOT DISAPOINT AS EVERY ONE WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH ME A RUNNING THROUGH MUD AND SINGING IN THE RAIN. LOL NOW THAT WAS GOOD.

Although I too would love to flick my engine for something with at least twice the grunt, it is the only thing that hasn't broken on my Niva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
