Hi all
I was at a guy I know today looking at the bakkie he is building. A old Isuzu with a 380hp Chev 350 v8, Bmw M3 gearbox and ford 9inch diff with different diff ends welded to the diff so he can run bigger sideshaft bearings. Nothing too strange about that. Interesting part is he did away with the steeringbox and is using a steeringrack. He says even without power steering it all ready turns much easyer than the box. It looks actually like a easy conversion. Will try and take a few photos tomorrow to show you guys.
Someday when my steeringbox packs up I will definitely do a mod like this. Something that also makes it very nice is you dont have any bump steer anymore. Guys you must see how custom everything is. He is building a pedal box for the brakes. It has two clutch master cylynders, one for the front and one for the rear. This pedal box is fully adjustable to set the bias.
Does anybody know of someone who has fitted a steeringrack to a lada? I think it will be much easyer to do a conversion like this.
Any opinions?
Charles

Hi Charles
To my mind rack and pinion is the best steering available. I had a look a while ago at the Lada with this in view but it did not look to me to be an easy conversion to do through lack of space. Over to you when you have time ;D

Hi Ronnie
Depending on if and when my steeringbox packs up, I will do it. Have a rack at work that looks like its the right size.

Hi Charles
Between you and the guy who did the V8 mod, I am sure you will be able to this mod.
Please keep us posted.
Regards
Danie P.S. Maybe you should convince the V8 guy to buy himself a Lada - it will be interesting to see what mods he will come up with.......... ;D

Hi Danie
He wanted a lada a couple of months ago. He has a truck with a 7.8l v8. First truck i have seen that can stand still and spin double wheels at the back. Everthing he builds is custom.

Well guys my steeringbox is damaged. Dont know if i can repair it. My question is do you guys think i will be wasting my time trying to modify a steering rack into my lada. As far as i know it will be a world first.

Hi Charles.
If you can get it to work it will be a master breakthrough due to that the righthand drive steering box is not available, seldom repairable, and if obtainable, very expensive.
Hope you can solve this issue.
Regards.

Why don't you become the first one in SA to do the Cressida power steering mod. I'm sure lots of would like to see that work. Cressida boxes must be very available.

Hi Charles
If I was you I'd look at the fiat one first, as the Lada engine and GB are fiat derived.
Do you have any in that excess fiat stock at work??

cressida wont work as the power mechanism will not fit due to manifold and break booster etc but can work with major mods done

Hi all
I have a couple of racks from Nissan Tiida/Livinas. Will firs see if that might not work. Otherwise I will go to the scrap yard and measure the racks from a uno and a A1 golf. Will have a good look at everything. Still have to remove the steeringbox aswell and the bolts will be a problem because they will press against the gearbox. Dont know if there is enough space for the angle grinder.

Hi Charles
Only one bolt will not come out, and I used a hacksaw on it. Just reverse it when you put it back, but watch the steering lock as the bolt affects it depending on the length.

Hi Ronnie
I pulled the gearbox today because the chassis has a big hole behind the steering box so i will have to repair that also. What thickness plate do you think i should use? The guy building the bakkie will weld it in with the co2 welder for me. He wil also help me plan the steering rack conversion. He has done plenty conversions so he knows of the commen problems. So hold thumbs, maybe this will af a world first.

Hi Charles I am no expert in repairing mounts like that but I would probably use 2 mm steel. We will see what others think should be used then we can both learn . Ronnie

Hi Charles.
That cressida boxes were only availlable in the very first mark1 cressida's in the late 70's early 80's. All the rest had steering rackes in.

Hi Charles
Looking at the latest pics at your "Blue Monster" thread I thought a rack and pinion mod (if possible) might be a much better solution.

Hi Danie
The rack I have is too long. Will take a measurement and go look for a shorter rack. Will reapair the body in the meantine and run with the box. Then later on when I have everything worked out do the conversion. Thing is I want to get my Lada on the road. N use having i and its just standing.
