Hi Guys
I'm a new member, joined about a week ago. I met two LOCSA members this wknd in CT - Mike "The House Doctor" and Des - both great guys! Mike helped me with a few tech issues, which leads me to my current problem/question: The two chain damper securing bolts are leaking oil and there was quite strong vibration on the bolt heads when I felt them. Mike and I tightened the chain, but I reckon the chain damper needs replacing BUT another problem I have is the thread of the hole for the top bolt is stripped, I guess from the vibrations, so the bolt is very loose at the moment. Do you guys think the vibrations were due the worn chain damper? And does anyone know where I can source a new chain damper from?
Thanks Jono

hi Jono
Warm welcome to you. I think it is quite normal for some oil (sweat) but it should not leak prefusely. The stripped thread is most likely your problem but I would think you should first have a look inside to find the actual problem.
If the chain is not serviced every 10 000km you could end up with a broken shoe or the bolt that keeps the shoe in place. If your car sounds like a diesel it is definately broken.
The vibration could be from a worn shoe that needs to be replaced soon BUT as I've said it is highly likely that only your adjustment bolt needs replacing or if possible rethreading.
Best place to get the parts is from Ventz in PMB or you could even order from Russia/EU directly.
Regards Marius

Thanks Marius, for your advise! When you refer to the "shoe" is that the thing I'm calling a chain damper, or are you refering to the tension shoe and chain tensioner bolt?
The engine sounds fine at the moment, so I think the shoe thingy must still be intact. Quite a bit of oil is coming out from the bottom security bolt, so the bolt definitely needs replacing. Do you know how one can re-thread the bolt hole in the cylinder head, as the thred is stripped?
Thanks again Jono

Hi Jono I refer to the tensioner shoe as in the attached picture. I added the bolt as it is not included in the picture - that bolt tends to break when not serviced regulary. The fact that you can not tighten the chain tensioner bolt properly would loosen the tensioner shoe and the resulting slack chain would cause the vibration that you can feel. If you don't have a tap and die set you can get the job done on the tensioner bolt at any engineering shop or Mike might be able to help. Hopefully the damage is not too bad on the bolt - but you should be able to get it from Ventz if they can't redo the thread. That should - at best - solve your problem. Regards Marius Attachments:

Thanks Marius for your extra advise and helpful picture! Sorry, I think I did not explain myself properly in my first post. I'm very new to Ladas, a complete novice, and may have got my bolts the wrong way around! The bolt hole that is threaded is the bottom bolt in the attached picture, label no 7. This is where I'm feeling the vibrations and the oil is coming out from these bolts. I've not had a look at the tension shoe or tried tightening the tension bolt. But, could the vibrations be caused by a problem with the tension shoe and bolt, rather than the chain damper? As you said in your earlier post, probably best if I take a look inside. I'm going to contact Mike tonight and hopefully he can give me a hand all with this. Regards Jono Attachments:

Hi Jono
The number 7 holes are not tapped, in the damper there are threaded holes. those bolts only hold the damper against the front of the cylinder head.

Thanks Ari! I had thought so - Phew! So the vibrations were most likely due to the chain being not tight enough and this caused the seals on the bolts to weaken and hence the oil leak. So, I've I'll tightened the chain, I'll re-seal the bolts and hopefully that will stop the vibrations and oil leaks.

If the chain still rattles you may find that your damper is broken.
Also dont over tighten those bolts you dont want to break the plastic damper.

Thanks Ari, I'll take it easy on the bolts! I'll tighten the chain tonight and check if the vibrations are less on the bolts. If it's not a loose chain causing vibrations, what's usually the next most likely culpret?

I assume you are talking about engine vibrations.
Your timing and the carb setup could also have an effect.

Hi Jono.
The bolts you refer to is the damper securing bolts and screw into a threaded insert inside the damper. In your case the insert broke out of the damper and will rattle and leak oil as the damper are no longer secured against the side and blocking off the oil. Unfortunately the damper had to be replaced and are only available from the agents.
Regards.

Thanks Ari and Hecules for the advice! I tightenend my timing chain last night (thanks Des the help!) and the the vibrations on the bolts are significantly less, in fact, they are essentially gone! Engine is sounding much better! I got a quote for a new chain damper from Ventz and some helpful advice on replacing it. Thanks again for all the help! Jono

Hi Bobby
Very practical mod.
Do you use the original tensioner, or a spring tensioner ?

Hi Charles
Sorry for late reply - I've been out of the office the last few weeks.
Chain damper was R286.40.
Cheers Jono
