Hi The 4th gear jumping out is probably due to the thrust ring being broken or worn, means stripping the tc and gb out to replace it unfortunately. It is an easy job, just time consuming. reg is probably best suited to have a look at your Niva for you. Tjeers Steve

Oh yes just the topic I need help on. Hahahah. I'm removing my entire drive train tonight. Making a big noise. And loads of vibration. Sooo. Easy to strip I hope. And why is it so time consuming? Also. I'm getting a pipe made for my air filter housing. What's the Inside diameter and the outside diameter of the pipe section coming from the cover??

Kobus, I thought it might be a good idea to allow contact details of fellow Lada owners - who already proved to be active forum members, and offered technical assistance, under this topic. Your guidance / conditions (if approved) will be appreciated. Regards Danie

Hi all,
I'm new in south africa moved from holland (ek is nie een kaaskop nie ek is in sa geboren) I bought myself a lada niva great car been driving ttue northen transvaal with it. only sadly the car has been abused badly, I've been to centurien lada dealer butt they moved to onderstepoort and I don't really know if they do what you ask and the charce highly. So I desided to do it myself. I'm now busy doing the head of the engine its been skimmed and the valves are being done. My question is do I need to remove the timing cover to be able to set the timing right for the engine? Of so where can I get the timing cover gasket? Harry

Hi saharry. Firstly welcome back home to South Africa and secondly, welcome to LOCSA. Our local parts suppliers contact details are available in the Spare Parts Suppliers thread. However we often order from the Ukraine or Europe, their details are also in the same thread. locsa.proboards.com/post/13506/threadTjeers Steve

Welcome Harry, Yes you have to remove the timing to make sure the bottom gear is properly aligned when you refit the chain. You should also inspect the tensioner shoe and guide for wear. If you have not yet downloaded the workshop and spares manuals, they are available here: locsa.atspace.com/technical.htmlLocally some replacement parts are available.NOTE!!Some of the items need to be adapted and in the case of the local rear wheel cylinders, the automatic adjustment of the rear brakes are no longer working. Lists here: locsa.proboards.com/thread/1331/updated-after-market-spares-listSpikes

Welcome Harry. And welcome to the boat. Seeing we in the same one. Lol. My Lada's name is Egor for future reference. Now Egor's timing is out so badly. I'll sbe removing the same cover and gasket. If I find a supplier of the gasket and seals ect I'll let you know. Just want to get the motor running smoothly with as little noise as possible. Its either that or install a big sound system. Hahahaha.

I trust you have tensioned the timing chain? A loose timing chain can be a great source of noise and a potential serious threat to the health of your motor.
The timing chain should be tensioned every 6 months or 10000km whichever is sooner.

Haha ja myn was sounding like a diesel butt the main reason of taking the engine appart was that the head gasket was frot and it was running on 3 cillinders. I think the previus owner was a cheap @#!/*? Becouse every gasket was also coverd with that terrible red sillicone. So I'm cleaning everyting. Oh a good sound system works really good haha

A full gasket set costs USD20 from ladapower.com when you add postage and VAT it comes to about R300 to get to your front door but will take 2 to 6 weeks. The full gasket sets includes a complete set of gaskets for Motor, GB and TC and I think the diffs, I dont remember off the top of my head. If you taking the timing chain cover off you will probably need the crankshaft oil seal as well, about USD5 if I remember correctly.

Damn that cheap then I pissed a lot of cash down the drain. Found a head gasketset had to pay 1100 rand for only the head gasketset. Oh well lesson learned... Again haha

Tappet Cover Head Timing Chain Cover Carb (x3) Inlet Manifold Exhaust Manifold Heater water seal Timing Chain Tensioner Gear lever Gear box inspection Rear Diff (I think) Dizzy Dip Stick Bellhousing to Gearbox (I think) Transfer case Inspection 5th Gear Housing Sump manual Fuel pump Fuel tank (I think)
Maybe more, I will have to check, got one at home at the moment

Ok thanx. Now to see if they have a seal kit. Cause I have leaks all over. And somehow my gearbox has no oil in... So I need plenty of seals.

No seal kit I am aware of, but seals are available on their site.
Best put 85w140EP GL5 (preferably Castrol) oil in your gearbox asap. It is probably leaking from the output shaft oil seal or the Gear lever. Ensure that the nut on the end of the output shaft is tight. Need to get TC out to do look at it.
