Does the noise change if you swerve the car from side to side on the road?

Sounds like damage. Must i change the bearings in the diff or tc? Or am i looking bigger damage?

First find out where the noise is coming from.
What oils do you have in?

Ok. it should be GL5 all over. The gearbox should not ever have GL4 in just GL5.

Ok i wil change the oil and see what happens. I dont think the sound wil go away with a oil change but its good place to start. I have this urge to take all the drive train components apart and see how they look inside. When i drained the oil the first time it was milky grey colour. Maybe all the bearings are rusted inside the diffs. Flippen bad idea to buy a non running lada!

I bought mine not knowing if its running. Jack the car up and feel the diff and listen for roughness. Remove the propshafts and feel the tc.
Put in 80w90 GL5 in your gearbox and 85w140 GL5 in the diffs and tc. First try and find out where the noise is coming from before you start stripping all over the show. I think it is the pinion bearing on the rear diff that is making a noise.

Biggest problem is diffs running around with too little oil and the bearing runs dry.

You can use a multimeter and check their resistance. If it is under 5 k/Ohm you can just leave them like that. More than that and they need replacing. 4 loose plug wires should be under R150.

Steve, did that pump or NIVA run dry to your knowledge. If it did the pump is probably stuffed beyond repair. Fuel lubricates and cools the pump.

Spikes, I have no idea, I need to get it out tomorrow, I see Pavel wants $6 for a pump repair kit, but I dunno if it is carb or TBI.
Lets see what transpires tomorrow

Keith Atkins kindly took Transfer Case temp readings for the forum: This is what he had to report: "I only managed to get into Johannesburg today.Just got back and the outside temperature is 27'CThe journey took around 35 minutes with some traffic in the CBD((0-10kph) and then highway (100kph) and finally to home (40-60kph).Temperature on the transfer case was at 41'C which seems reasonable to me"
Thanks Keith, now the engineers and gurus can debate from a baseline,

Ok, so according to the manual I narrowed it down to 2/3 things. Since I don't have the testing tool it makes it a bit more difficult. Btw, does anyone know if the Lada 1.7i is ABD2 compliant? I noticed there are some cheap tools available. After following the attached steps the manual indicates that it might be a short on the injector control circuit (see attachment, used multimeter), but since I don't have the diagnostic tool I couldn't eliminate the manifold and throttle position test. Does anyone know if there is a workaround way to test those two? And whether a problem with the above two could also cause a false-negative test result (on for about 2 seconds) for the injector control circuit? Thanks, Koos And I learned that my "Check Engine" light never worked.

lol, I find it amazing where you can connect pipes to in a Niva and it still runs with no apparent ill effect, however I am unable to confirm the accuracy for you.

Think it is about time I head off to Nelspruit and go visit Spikes and, erm, "borrow" his manuals as I am too lazy to print the manuals, just ask Charles how often he gets phone calls from me ...
