Hi, I am looking for a spare wheel, the original so I can stach it under the hood. First question, the Niva is fitted with 15" rims currently, will the standard 16" spare work then if I need to use it? If not, what are my other options? Another 15" spare? Will it fit under the hood? Where else do I mount it? Second question ;D: Under the hood, where the spare would be mounted, is what looks like an electrical outlet of some sort... Sorta looks like a 12V jack, but smaller, what is it? It looks factory to me... Third Question: Where do y'all insure your Lada's? I just want 3rd Party/Fire&Theft, but the companies I spoke to either don't have the car on record (so can't help) or want to charge a fortune... I mean it's not a daily driver, (if I do have an accident, aint no one denting the steel on the Niva) so what's the story? Best I got so far was R150.00/month for 3rd Party/Fire&Theft from Budget, but they insist on a minimum value of R45 000.00... That's like twice what she's worth ... I don't get it, I had a Series Landy on 3rd Party/Fire&Theft at Outsurance for R50/month, they wanted nearly R300 for the same on the Niva?!?!?!

Tnt, your first question, regarding a 16" spare tyre for a Lada with 15" wheels, has been discussed at another forum, (unfortunately I cannot remember at which forum) quite a while ago. The answer to the question was - yes, the diffs do allow some slip to compensate for the bigger 16" tyre, but the 16" spare tyre should not be used for long distances, and must be replaced as soon as possible. When I bought my Lada, I did not like the idea of a spare tyre under the hood, so I bought myself an extra 15" Smith Trailduster rim, (quite cheap) and removed all brackets under the hood. Unfortunately I never tried to fit the new 15" spare under the hood, before the brackets have been removed - so I do not know whether the wheel wil fit. A "swing arm" can be made to mount the spare wheel behind the back door, or a roof rack can obviously be used to mount the spare wheel on top of the roof - a nice pic can be found at the bottom of this page : forum.ladanivabelgium.be/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2025&start=30Your second question : My Lada does not have an electric outlet like yours - any possibility of a photograph? Your third question: When I started stripping my Lada for restoration earlier this year, I decided to cancell the insurance for the time being - not throwing any money at an insurance company while the car is not on the road. When cancelled, the monthly premium was about R420.00......... Regards Danie

Tnt, your second question, that 12v electrical socket at the rear of your spare wheel is a inspection lamp socket as per the workshop manual and was factory fitted. The reason for that is that the Lada came original equipped with a 12v inspection lamp and a tyre pump from the factory. The plug is a Hella heavy duty plug and is connected to fuse no: 10 on the fuse box. This is the same fuse as for the hooter, interior lights and brake lights. The male plugs is available from any outdoor place or caravan dealers. I've also fitted an aditional 12v socket inside my vehicle that is connected to the one in the enjin bay to use for my GPS or when charging batteries for my camara while traveling.
Regards, Hercules.

Ok, thanks guys. Guess a spare 15" it will be then. Thanks for the pics, roof rack looks the business. Thanks for the info on the socket ( and for indirectly solving my brake lights not working issue...)

Hey tnt, you might want to check out a sight called backrack.co.za
They make a spare wheel carrier that attaches onto the towbar, it is pricey, but you might be able to get someone to make up something similar, and it does look good, and is easy to attach.
