Hi All. Is there anyone who could tell me the cost of a waterpump locally. Mine failed just before I was due to leave on a work commitment so I decided to have one imported seeing as there was no rush to get it here. Including import tax I paid about R750 and it took 3 weeks. The time was ok but the price seems a little steep. Any thoughts? Cheers Karl

Hi Karl Locally - I would think - you would pay at least double that amount I don't know where you ordered it from and whether it is the original Russian one with the retainer screw - but that seems fair. Still a lot of money to pay for a stupid water pump though Regards Marius

Hi Karl
There seem to be several aftermarket waterpumps on the Russian market, and apparently the quality might differ from good to not so good. Prices also seem to differ.
Waterpump prices at the local Agents are not the same, and I do not know where Chris Swales and Jan Pretorius get their pumps from. Ventz Lazarov - the Russian mechanic in Pietermaritzburg sells a pump which is even more pricey - but apparently the quality is better than many of the pumps which are imported from Russia.
On a positive note , it all depends on affordability - if the local prices are too steep for any owner, cheaper waterpumps can be imported from abroad.
Regards
Danie

My water pump blew last friday. The guys at Centpart ordered a pump from Cape Town, manufacturer's name is PWP. It cost R350 including courier. It looks like this is dirt cheap, so I hope the quality isn't too bad (it probably is). But we'll have to see. One thing though- since I installed the new one, my engine has been running on average 10deg lower than before. How could a new water pump do this? Before, water was pouring out of the pump (I also hadn't put the fan and pulley on nicely the last time, so there was a wobble) so now everything is staying put.
OK, bye.

Hi Darryn
If that waterpump is a perfect fit it would be great news for all of us. Do you have a parts number a perhaps a pic of the pump?
A unbroken pump would indeed make a diffs - AND if you got the correct ammount of ant-freezw/water (about 10 liters) you should be fine.

Hi Darryn
That is indeed great news. I am convinced that more local citizens would be more interested in buying Ladas once everyone knows that spare parts are available at better prices.
Centpart's contact details will be very welcome at the forum.

Hi Danie,
Just a small remark - I'm not a Russian mechanic. I'm Bulgarian mechanical engineer and businessman. And beware of cheap imitations, when your engine gets overheated - we will talk again.

Hi Ventz
I do apologize about the incorrect information about your original nationality, as well as occupation.
The (incorrect) info revealed by myself at this forum was the result of information I got from another local owner about three years ago. Unfortunately I never made an effort to investigate this information.
On a positive note - this website has no boundaries and we do respect all our members , wherever they found themselves or wherever they came from.
And thanks for the warning about cheap imitations - I am sure you do know what you are talking about.
I will change the remarks about your original nationality elsewhere at the forum.

Hallo Comrade Ventzelski It is Comrade Mariskiy from the KGB - I have forwarded ALL their names and addresses you can proceed now. Make my day PS - on a more serious note I am very glad to see that you are getting more and more active on the forum - we need someone with your vast knowledge and experience on the Niva. HI JUST CHECK IF THE IMPELLOR IS PLASTIC TYPE OR BRASS/COME ALLOW. NOCK OFFS PLASTIC DON'T LAST WELL IF CAR IS IN DESERT AND GETS TOO HOT IT STOPS ROTATING THEN BAM. PLUS THE REASON WHY CAR IS RUNNING COOLER THE IMPELLER IS SMALLER BUT LETS WATER CIRCULATE FASTER THROUGH SYSTEM.

Nope. The impeller is exactly the same size, and cast iron. The oil seal assembly was slightly different, but not by much. I'm not expecting this to be a permanent solution, I just can't afford to buy genuine right now (really). I always watch my temp gauge like a hawk, use a high quality anti-freeze, and will continue to do so- it's definitely NOT an "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" kinda thing.
So don't worry, my pedigree chums- no overheating is gonna happen in my RPG.

OK WELL SOUNDS GOOD FOR NOW KEEP AN EYE AND EAR ON THE SHAFT BEARING AS IT WEARS FAST IF SLIGHTLY MISS ALIGNED AND NOT LUBED PROPERLY.

Hi Darryn
Hopefully the Chinaman will last a long time to come - keep us posted on it's performance.
Interestingly my original impeller was plastic - the current one is cast iron - both original pumps.

Hi,
Doesn't matter plastic or cast iron, they are same shape. Plastic is preferable, it is lighter and that prolong the bearing's life.
Yas, I'm James Bond fan. I've got all his films at home.
What about AK47? Marius, do you have BG version at home???!!! Or you are in the army.

Hi Ventz Just an interest - here is a Bulgarian version of the AKSU in NATO 5.56 caliber - used by the Special Forces. To get back to topic - it would fit nicely under the seat of the Niva ;D Attachments:

Hi, Doesn't matter plastic or cast iron, they are same shape. Plastic is preferable, it is lighter and that prolong the bearing's life. No problem with Plastic - I bought my Lada with a plastic version, and when the bearing started giving problems, I modified the waterpump with an aftermarket bearing. The plastic impeller outlasted the aftermarket bearing as well. I never experienced any overheating problems either. Danie

Hi guys
Has anybody got information on a local replacement water pump. It seems that the seal has started leaking on mine after I replaced the radiator cap and now have the correct pressure in the cooling system.
Also, would it be Wise to just replace the seal and maybe bearings or should I rather get a complete front assembly?
NB: Darryn did mention that he got a local water pump last year for R350 at a local supplier, but no part number was mentioned.
Regards
Hein

Just thought a note about the aftermarket waterpumps at Autozone should be made under this Thread as well: Saleri aftermarket waterpumps are available at branches of Autozone countrywide. Ask for "Saleri waterpump - Part No. PA 231" Do not ask for a "Lada Niva waterpump" - they will deny that they do carry any stock .Current price : R330.00 excl. VAT. Thanks to Spikes for investigating this source. Danie

Hi Charles
Thanks for the info. I will contact Autozone to see if they have some here in PE. For that price it makes sence to replace the unit.
