. Hi all Be aware that draining the radiator prior to removal (or for any reason) by removing the bottom hose will allow copious amounts of water to wash over the alternator. If the rad is filled with anti-freeze, corrosion in the alternator is sure to follow with a drastic reduction in output from the alternator. Cover the alternator with a small sheet of plastic to keep most water out. Regards Spikes

Hi Spikes I see you caused some major flooding today ;D You should only use the drain tap bottom left on the radiator (the other side) and the drain plug on the engine block - also on the left side to drain. Now would also be a good time to check the water pump for movement on the shaft and the condition of the seals. The original can also be greased through the retaining nut. When you refill - open up the heater vent and get 4 liters of anti-freeze and about 6 liters of water in the system. This is how it should be done (near the bottom of the page - locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=22&page=7Happy mopping Marius

Hi Marius, Nope, I did not drain the rad today, that happened early in May while the Lada was still under the sellers one month warranty and the front crankcase oil seal had to be replaced. I only saw what happened when I popped into the workshop for my office keys left in the Lada..Today when I took the alt to an auto electrician, the real damage became visible. Corrosion everywhere inside. The powder on the aluminium, smells like anti-freeze and tastes the same. As for tasting the powder...it cannot damage my 60+ old gut anymore Just thought I'll pass a heads up on when I put the alt back and saw how low it is located in relation to the rad. Due to the canted engine Cheers all Spikes

Hi Spikes
When I ordered the seal from Ronnie's best friend he told me that there was a more sinister reason why the seal broke. Turned out to be BS. Did you buy the car from Jan?

Hi Spikes / Marius
The radiator on my Lada does not have a drain valve, and the drain plug on the engine block is so tight - I decided rather to install a drain valve in the bottom radiator hose when I did the "cooling mod" :

Hi Marius, No not from Jan. I did speak to them smoetime in Feb 2010 but hi sasking prices was way out of line to my mind at the time. I found the car in Nelspruit. It is an ex GP vehicle so it may have been to Jan's but I can see no evidence of it. 2000 1.7i well looked after by the previous owner so I am holding thumbs Regards Spikes

Hi Ronnie
I do not have specs on the spare altys - all I know the connections are slightly different from the connections on my Lada's alternator.
I still have to get all of them tested to see if it works.
Just let me know if you still need one.
Regards

Hi Danie Thank you for the offer, it is very much appreciated. I have already had this one fixed and will reinstall it today. This one also is not original, made in India and no spares available. The brushes and diode`s are now Lucas. Ronnie
