Hi Guys
Looks like some of us do have a major Band Width problem ? I am not a computer specialist at all, but often do spend some time on my PC.
I also do have a 1GB (Broadband) per month contract, which is more than enough for my personal use. I spend at least 1 hour per weekend on long distance calls to the US, via Skype, and often do You Tube downloads.
What I am actually trying to say - are your problems not rather "Service Provider related" ?
Regards
Danie

Hi Danie Could very well be - I do get a detailed printout of my usage. It is surprising how quickly it goes out the window I'm actually very happy with the setup I've got - No Telkom and it is normally pretty fast. The Seacom cable packed up twice though Regards Marius

Hi All
I just started wondering whether the idea of forwarding "nice big pics" is not causing problems for members with band width problems ?
If so, I will rather stop forwarding pics in future.

Hi Danie
I also have 1 gig and I know this month I used a lot trying to get prices. The problem here is the conflicting prices you get especially at border posts. The result is I surf until I have a few prices then use what looks right. Normally I would not have a problem. I think you can continue with your "big" photo`s. If other people have a problem then change to suit them.

Ronnie

Hi guys
Downloading the pictures should not cause any problems - you will have to download a few hundred pics to make a major dent in your cap limit.
Even browsing through many pages/websites shouldn't eat too much into your cap. One thing that does is downloading video material and another big culprit is auto updates.

when we went to broadband, they told us one of the biggest causes of eating up your limit is going on things like facebook./ebay etc.

Hi Andy
Curious to know how your download speed are comparing to your Asian neighbors in the North - or the EU for that matter?
On this side of the Indian Ocean we are still way behind.

Hi guys
If you are basically just checking emails and browsing websites - 1 gig should be more than enough and like Hercules should actually have quite a bit left at the end of the month.
Once you start downloading programs/updates/multi-media you will soon run out of band width. I'm not a Facebook/eBay fan so I wouldn't know any of what Andy suggested.
I know that Skype takes up very little band width - but You Tube is like an opened drain plug.
If you are mainly an email/browsing kind of user you have a SP issue.

Hi Ronnie
I'm on a "tea break" ;D
It is known that some SP's cheat. Just Google your SP and see if any irregular stuff comes up.
Something like - SP name + band width + cheating/robbing

Hi Marius,
I did google vodacom but only saw a lot of complaints. I loaded 110mb yesterday at lunch time and have already used 50mb. We use the system mainly for e-mails banking and LOCSA, with the occasional photo coming in on the e-mails. Some of the photos we receive are over 2mb each. I think that is part of the problem. Just one e-mail had 7 photos so that would explain some of the usage today 16mb. I will ask the sender to get his son to set it up so that his photos don't use so much data. Just also checked that one video from lada australia was also huge. I suppose we are lucky that we have friends here on the site who may be able to suggest something that will help. Ronnie has you guys to "talk" to. Anyway, enjoy what's left of the weekend everyone.
Regards
Freda

Hi Ronnie/Freda
Ok I see you've got Vodacom 3G (you should see a lot of complaints ;D) and what you said about pics larger than X MB is quite true.
In smaller towns you should start to get wireless networks which are great and much much faster and much much cheaper than your setup.
Ask around in Pennington if you have such a SP. Once you've changed you'll never look back.

Hi Marius,
In Joburg we had ADSL and it was a total disaster. We could not get on the internet for neighbours using it. Will have a look at Pennington and see what others are using, some I know are using Telkom. I did enquire about Telkom but found out that it was more expensive than using the 3G Vodacom. And Ronnie says to tell you that you are having too long a tea break. I have him trained he is doing the braai.

Freda

Hi Freda Thankfully most of these Wireless Networks are private - I know Telkom is also doing similar setups but are more expensive and much slower. Hopefully you can get lucky in Pennington. My better half is not here at the moment so I can have one of my "extended" tea breaks Enjoy the braai Regards Marius

Hi Ronnie.
I use Iburst wireless with 4 e-mail addresses and windows and AVG anti virus auto updates. Every month I also updated our 2 GPS's.
The only thing I do not run is videos or you -tube, because the computer is miles to slow.
Regards.

Hi Freda / Hercules My previous Broadband contract was also with Iburst, (wireless, 500MB, and 3 year contract) and I never had any problems with Iburst. During the first two years (or longer) the unused space could be carried over to the next month - at one stage I've had more than 2GB which had been carried over. They only stopped the "carry over" facility at a later stage of the contract. My new contract is with Neotel - also wireless, and 1GB. The only reason why I changed contracts, is because the Neotel contract includes a free telephone ("landline"), which actually is the Modem. Freda, details of the Neoconnect Prime, (R279.00pm, 1G Broadband option) can be viewed here: www.neotel.co.za/wps/portal/neotel_home_services# If you are interested you can just type in your street addres here, to see if you do have Neotel coverage in your area: www.neotel.co.za/wps/portal/neotel_order_nowIf you do have coverage in your area, and you are interested, you can just click on the "order now" button, type in the details, and they will deliver all equipment at your front door ! Enjoy the braai. Regards Danie

i'm on adsl with 1 gig.
i just use it for emails/checking our ebay (& trying not to buy anything) as i collect ww2 german stuff,& costs absolute fortune.
i don't waste time on facebook or downloading movies etc. (don't get time anyway)
i am told that if i go over the limit, the internet will just go at slow dialup speed, haven't had that happen yet.
i get a lot of clips/big emails sent through too,no probs.

We are still on rip-off rates here. Hopefully I will live long enough to see low rates like other countries have ;D

Hi guys, there has been problems with the adsl lines from telkom the last 2 or so days, thats why the net has been down or super slow for some people. i have a 3gig adsl account with intercom and another with telkom, between me and my sister we get through 3gigs in about 3weeks. we do use you tube and facebook, facebook eats up cap as you are forever loading photos and apps, you tube also eats cap becouse you are streaming. a 1gig account is more than enough to just use email and websites like locsa..
just my 2cents

Oh yes, and problems with wireless isyou just have to what where you use it, if the kitchen is between you and the router and someone uses the microwave, you lose signal for 3min or until the popcorn is done, but otherwise wireless is all good

Help all you computer experts
I have 1.5 gig every month with Vodacom. I continually see usage when logging off of 80meg. Freda has stopped all the programs she knows of from doing automatic updates. Today the 11th of the month the 1.5 gig is gone. Most days I only go to LOCSA, the uk and the australian forums. Who can help please

Hi Ronnie Windows always removes something very useful with a new release Go to this website and download the Network Activity Indicator (see links) www.howtogeek.com/howto/7230/get-the-classic-style-network-activity-indicator-back-in-windows-7/Once installed on your system you can monitor how much you are using for as long as the computer is running by just hovering the mouse over the Indicator. Browsing like you do would use very little of your bandwith - but once you start downloading programs and multi-media like videos on YouTube - it flies! Downloading pictures can have an effect but not nearly as much as the multi-media stuff. If you are not downloading or browsing and the indicator is still on it is most likely some application that is updating itself - that can also eat at your bandwith. It would be wise to keep at least your security and Windows updated. Good luck and let us know what's up. Marius
