Hi Barry
A warm welcome to the forum.
I remember that one of our members from Australia (Andy) once mentioned that a broken spring washer on the input shaft of the gearbox is the cause.
If I remembered correctly and that it is indeed the case - it would be a very simple and should be relatively cheap to fix.
If not it might be a worn selector fork.

Hi Barry
Welcome on board, hopefully you will be able to solve the problem soon.
I've also had a similar (4 th gear) problem, which was caused by a warn selector fork , The warn fork has been re welded / rebuilt by a gearbox specializing company in Durban.
Just don't try to keep the gear lever in place by hand - it will cause additional damage to the gears and synchronizing.
Where do you find yourself ?
Regards
Danie

Hi Barry.
Welcome to the Lada forum. As Marius explained, a broken spring washer or a worn selector or a combination of both.
An other possibility is that the spring that keep the selector ball in the indent to lock the selector in 4th gear is broken and result in the gear be driven out when driving.
Hope you can get this problem resolve before huge damage occur in the gearbox
Regards.

Barry - you should be able to get a selector fork from Jan at Centurion Lada - probably for around R200 Chances are he might stock the washer as well. If you can't get the parts from him - try Chris Swales in Durban. All there info is here - locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=12If all else fails you can easily order cheaply from Russia and the EU. Details also in the above thread. Hope you get sorted soon. Marius

more often than not,it's the curved washer on the front imput shaft (input shaft has 4th gear on it)
the only time have really done selector forks is through peeps driving around with hand on gear lever. 4th selector also is used for 3rd gear.

Hi Guys
Thank you for the help much appreciated.
Today I spent the most of the day servicing the car(I am not a good machanic by any means) New engine oil and gear box oil in the diffs, transfer box and gear box. I remember Jan saying that he jacks his car a bit to one side so he can get a bit more oil into the gear box. Is this good or bad? Should I take the prop shafts out to grease the universal joints? My car also reves hi(between 2000 and 300 rpm) sometimes for no apparent reason when the accelerator is not being pushed. Does anyone know why the car does this. I am also looking for new origin lada wheels. If anyone has please give me a shout.
Thanks again.
Barry

Hallo Barry.
The accelerator cable and link joints are dry. A little spray penetrating oil will do the job.
My vehicle tends to it as well shortly after the engine been washed and a little spray oil do it.

Thanks Ronnie as I did not notice at all.
Barry, look and see if you have not some pipes that might be loose or parrished which result in air sucked in and chase the revs up. Also look if the central injection unit is not loose on the manifold.
Regards.

HI Barrie
I haven't tried lifting my Lada at the one side when refilling oil yet - but I guess if you do lift the car high enough, this method should work.
You don't have to remove the prop shafts - just loosen the grease nipples slightly, then grease, and tighten afterwards.

Hi Barry If the grease nozzle doesn't fit just grind it down a bit (some advice Danie gave me I overfilled my gearbox with 2 liters - I checked the seals today and found that some oil came through the boot on the gear leaver. Not a problem - but I don't like oil leaks. I reduced the oil level to 1.8 liters. You can do Jan's method - but the best way to do it is from the top - removing the gear leaver. Make sure that you remove only the 3 outer nuts AND NOT the 3 inner nuts. Regards Marius

make sure you use 85/140 in diffs, not normal gear oil (gear oil in diffs is too light for our conditions)
yes, gearbox needs to be overfilled by half litre.
no need to remove top off box, filler bung is on lhs of box, fill to bung level, then to add extra oil (remember to refit bung if you're going to start the car) easiest way is jack front of car so lhf wheel is couple inches off ground,or drive lhf wheel onto curb,or block of wood etc. saves a lot of time & hassle.
no Marius,you haven't slipped yet ;-P

Just make sure that the car is secure when you get underneath. I would rather park on something like a curb/block of wood than use a jack. Be safe - don't slip

Hi Ari
There is a plug on both sides and the left is the filler. I do not know what the one on the right is for as it is higher and there is not much space.
