In my opinion, the best tool I found for dismantling a gearbox is a baseball bat

Along the same lines, James and I are not really interested in fighting our way to repairing a gearbox and was wondering if anyone knows a reputable gearbox mechanic in Gauteng who has worked on Niva's as he has a major problem with what we think is a bearing failure in his gearbox.
When we drained the GB on Sunday to replace the oil, there was silver sludge which came out (probably due to incorrect oils used in the past (the diffs also had the same silver sludge)) and a sliver of silver metal about 1.3cm long by about .4cm tall and fractions of a mm thick. There is also a strange noise from the GB occasionally when driving so there are definetly more broken bits in there. Thus the sooner the better to get it fixed.

Pizzo you will have to remove the complete box. Steve mentioned the difficult part in removing the rear cover - it helps quite a bit when you initially leave the box in second gear instead of neutral (also when you put the cover back on). Steve > silver sludge like that normally means a major overhaul - not to mention the shavings. This indicates gears not meshing properly which could also be due to collapsed bearings Marius

Actually, Chris (spencer) and I had not had any beers at that stage, it was about 10am. Used it as a brace to hold the GB still while trying to undo the nuts holding the shafts in place. Tjeers Steve

so having owned the lada for a year now i replaced 2 rear seals on my gearbox for no apparent reason, 1st 1 was when i repaired the 5th gear (within the 1st week) 2nd 1 +/- 11 months/3000 km ago as there was still a leak which did not solve the problem, both times i used a local seal (which is not supposed to work). got an original seal from Ventz yesterday and fitted it.......but the local seal was still not leaking and was still good as new, after a brief inspection i discovered that my leak was coming from between the spline and the yoke now the big question is why, there is no excessive play/clearance on the yoke i would be very interested to hear your opnions regards

Hi Sparky
I would not know the reason, but if I was stuck I would apply some sealer to the splines like Hylomar or any sealer that does not go hard. No doubt someone will make a suggestion. One question is the oil deflector plate in place ? just behind the bearing.

Thats why. Box takes 1.35l. I would not fill with more than 1.5. revove the plug on the side and drain out 500ml.

Charles unfortunately this was happening before i filled it, basically there was about a cup of oil left in the box due to the leak, kinda made a plan yesterday and dumped around 2l in and let it stand overnight, so far no leak, also haven't put the gearlever back yet

hy gents! I have a problem!!! I was replacing my 5th gear on the gear box thinking that the previous owner just took off the 5th...but...he changed the all thing with a proper 4 gear! So ,as you can see in the picture, the shafts are differents and i cant replace my lovely 5th gear! Question: Do you think that if i just change the intermediate shaft and the gear unit i can put back my 5th or there are going to be other differences? Thanks a looot!!! Pizzo
