Hi all, I am Paolo and I have a Lada Niva of 2002 since one year. I am an international student here in South Africa until march next year. I found this forum while searching some mechanic specialized in Lada in the Western Cape area (with no success). My Lada has a very noisy gearbox since a couple of months and the problem is getting worse. Sound like something metallic screak comes from gearbox when I drive in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gear...not in 4th when there is no bad sound. I tried to bring the car to many mechanics here in Stellenbosch but they horrify and do not want to touch the gearbox. I would like to fix my car and enjoy with her the last southafrican months...and then sell in good working condition! Do you think I have to post this technical issue in the apposite area? Greetings to everyone!
Paolo

Hi Paolo
Welcome on board, and sorry to hear about the gearbox problem.
Another possible solution would be to try some of the Gearbox and Diff specialists (like Gearmax) in your area. I discovered that a local gearbox and diff specialist in Durban (not Lada related) worked on many Lada gearboxes in the past - and I will not be surprised if many more specialists all over the country do have a sound Lada gearbox experience as well........
To find a Gearbox specialist in your area, just get hold of a "Yellow Pages" Telephone directory (Issued by Telcom).
Regards
Danie

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome and for the suggestions! I'll call Mike and see what he can do with my car. Regarding oil check, actually there is some oil leaking around the gearbox and a mechanic said it is no possible to understand where it come from...he refilled even if I think he had some problems with the lids...I wanted to try to fill from the top removing the gear-lever like suggested in this website: www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/GearboxTopUp.htmDo you think it is a good idea just to see what happens, just before Mika could see the car. Anyway, thanks again for your help, I will update you about the progress! Paolo

Hallo Paolo
Welcome to the forum!
Good idea to check the oil first - like Andy said. First - as you are going to open from the top - drain all the oil from the bottom plug. You should have at the very least 1 liter of oil in the box (1.3 liters).
If the oil was very low - refill with 2 liters from the top.
If the oil level was ok check the oil plug for metal pieces (metal residue is fine) - also for copper shavings. Check the condition of the gears - if they seem fine it is probably a bearing (or bearings) that needs to be replaced.
Let us know
Marius

Hi Marius and thanks for your suggestions,
I read some contrasting ideas about the kind of oil to put in the Lada's gearbox, GL4 or GL5..what oil do you suggest me to buy?

Hi Paolo
I've used a good quality GL5 (Fuchs WP) oil for many years without any problems. I've only recently switched to GL4 in the gearbox. The GL4 I've got is Easy Shift from Caltex and the gear change is smoother.
Personally I believe you can use both - provided it is good quality oil. I would not recommend any synthetic oils or stuff like Prolong - that includes the engine.

good quality 75/90-80/90 oil
here we use castol vmx-m
very good oil,& if you're having synchro problems (crunching in gear changes) this helps.
don't have to fill through top, filler bung is about 1/2 way up on lhs of box. fill to bung level, then drive lf wheel on to curb or block of wood, then add extra 500mls.
