I have some discussion with a Lada owner from Cape Town who has a fuel supply problems in his Niva 1.7i and he asked me for advice. We exchanged few e-mails and meanwhile he told me all consumables are new including the fuel filter. On my question where he get the fuel filter, the answer was - I found it locally made by GUD.
There is no any filter in SA which match the genuine Lada filter.
With a misgiving I demanded a photo and all of you can see what's the story.
On my next question how he get such an idea to install so wrong filter, the answer was - I'm new with Lada and just follow the list of local aftermarket spares for Lada published in LOCSA/Facebook.
Is that true... Spikes, Steven...?
Ventz
Does anyone else has a similar modification??

high pressure fuel line...this mod is just to get you home when you had a fuel line failure. And even then i would not risk it. Besides that, you have to cut to fuel lines beyond repair

I also don't have a TBI but I can't remember anyone having issues with the GUD E106 filter? I can only presume that the person in Cape Town was given the wrong filter by mistake. Very recently I was looking for Ferodo FDB195 shoes. Nobody had any stock but one of the retailers offered me an ATE alternative based on the parts number and it looked nothing like the Ferodos! Wish it did because it was a hell of a lot cheaper too!

That's the main problem for majority of the Ladas here - the owner's attitude - CHEAP, CHEAPER, CHEAPEST. The main and the only criteria - it should be dirt cheap. The spares should cost pocket money, the car must run if possible without any maintenance; but how the car feels and how reliable it will be - nobody cares.
All modifications are result of such a thinking. The filter above as well.
And the final price is always higher with the cheap stuff rather the genuine - just total waste of money, time and nerves; besides sometimes the car is on stage of no repair. You get what you pay.
This is the truth which I fiercely defended here at LOCSA at the time when the members were still handful. But not any more; it was such a strong and senseless opposition, accusations, quarrelsomeness, so I quit. My old posts could be still somewhere in the archives. I love these cars and I want them as much as many on the road and I've been always happy to advice 24/7 whoever is in trouble but if someone wants to discover again America or ruin his vehicle, I also don't care any more.
Not in the specific case now. It is dangerous for all passengers in the car.
The fuel injection feeding system needs high pressure fuel supply; the carb models need low pressure diaphragm pump just to fill up the carburettor. The Niva injection petrol pump situated inside the fuel tank is quite powerful. The filter must be bolted with hydraulic fittings to the metal pipes. There is also rubber sections of the supply lines but it's a special rubber with diagonal synthetic cotton reinforcement inside.
The small worm clamps are unable to hold that pressure, sooner or later the petrol will leak.
Two Ldas here in KZN with such a mod exploded in flames on the road like in Hollywood movies. Both been at one time to Lada Centurion. Amazingly even the windscreen rubber seal and the wipers somehow burnt. Lucky drivers and passengers managed to escape but the cars burnt. It could happened easily again and next time the fortune could be not so favourable. Imagine if small children are blocked on the rear seat.
I still keep the windscreen seal, the bonnet, the vent and some small pieces of one of the burnt cars.
On Monday I'm gonna visit the local spare shops and see what does it like GUD E106.
All injection Ladas here in SA arrived from the factory equipped with fuel filter AC Rochester made in England. I had before CHAMP FN90 made in Germany, currently I use SCT ST330 also made in Germany.
Regards
Ventz

Hi Ventz, If you have a look in the second link that I posted, you will see from the hyperlink that the SCT ST330 is a direct interchange for E106 www.autopartoo.com/oem/partscrossinterchange.html?search=E106W3UYou may have to wait for the E106 to be ordered. I had to wait tbree days but as I had planned for the service well ahead, it was not an issue. Spikes

It would be interesting to compare the price difference (if any) between the SCT ST330 and the GUD E106. Another thing to consider is availability. Is the ST330 available in major spares shops (I presume the E106 is)?

Autozone, Midas and Bosch outlets should have in stock in the major centers. Ordering should no take more than a couple of days.
I paid R195.89 for the E106 filter from Autozone in 2011.

Spikes I assume you are only referring to the E106? If so - do you know whether the ST330 is available at the major spares shops?

Thanks Spikes. I tried to get a price on the ST330 and about the only one I could find with a quick search was at www.lott.de. All their prices claim to be discounts from the normal retail price but I assume prices exlude any shipping costs which is normally quite expensive from Europe. They feature several of the SCT fuel filters. The most expensive SCT filter I saw retailed at almost 13 Euro. Fortunately the ST330 filter is cheapest one I saw retailing at 3.99 Euro. Their discount price is 2.99 Euro! They do except Paypal and other major credit cards. www.lott.de/autoteile/::XY253202.htmlMarius

Hi I have had a chat to the owner in Cape Town and they are going to try and get the metal connectors to connect to the fuel filter. The are probably going to have to replace the piping to do so and said they will contact you Ventzel. What do i do find interesting is that a TBI I looked at yesterday had the metal connectors to the fuel filter and then on the inlet side there was a piece of rubber pipe about 30 cm long after it comes up from under the body and ended about 15 cm's before the fuel filter. The filter with screw fittings. The Clamps on the high pressure hose ID is the same as the OD on the steel pipes Other end of flexible hose is made off with socket and union combination to unscrew the last section of steel pipe to the monojet

Well... I visited a local Auto Spares shop where a lot of strange spare parts are available together with the common ones, the variety is more than at Autozone or Midas; I'm client there for years and have some discount due to long mutual business. They immediately found me E106 but by their words it was the only one in stock due to the high price.
The price was R498.60.
I had intention to buy one and to test it on one of my cars. But really I expected a price +/-R200 as Spikes wrote above. With price ~R500 I lost interest - it's too heavy for just a simple test.
Anyway, I had a close look and it seems suitable for our 1.7i. It has sticker E106 on the box but it was not GUD product but MANN product with another serial number. As far as I know MANN head quarter is in New Jersey, USA and that means the filter is imported. Or I could be wrong if a company branch is situated here in SA and this is local product, I'm not sure (few years ago I used for Lada locally purchased MANN air filters made in Spain); but if it's a local product - why is so expensive?
Marius, I looked at your link and to find a SCT filter for only 2.99 Euro is a real jackpot. It's unbelievable. Nothing cost 3 Euro now in Europe; perhaps a Coca-Cola and bottle of beer in the supermarket or ice cream on the street. Never automobile spare part. It could be some stock clearance.
I'm gonna visit the spare part shop again and bring a metal fittings to double check the threat, just to be sure that an option for suitable local filter really exist.

MANN is probably the WK6123 from the list that was provided above somewhere.

Ventz As I mentioned - they give the normal retail price as 3.99 Euros(R50)which is still a bargain. The R500 quote for a fuel filter that you mentioned for the TBI is quite something else! I presume you have the SCT in stock. Are you prepared to give a quote? Marius

Those are the correct hoses, may as well replace all while busy as some they perish over time. Ari

I would like to support Ventz and his views about using only the correct parts. I have seen similar mods to this and it is not correct, it may even be poor at filtering!
I've had many cars in my life, of many makes, but one thing I have always stuck to and that is fit only genuine parts or those which are a direct repleacement by a known manufacturer. I even fit OE spark plugs! I have never, ever fitted anything but an original oil filter!
I know we all have to watch our money, but I remember what John Egan of Jaguar once said "quality is remembered long after the cost is forgotten". Paulg
