Good Evening Guys. As most of you know by now I am not very good at mending Ladas and tend to rely on 'the professionals'. See the recent post under windscreen washer bottle which has led to my ordering a new alternator from Lada Power. The new fan belt which was fitted at the same time as the alternator repair (?) 'exploded' today on my way to OR Tambo Airport. I understand that it was the correct fan belt which had been fitted (PG218) and I think that the attached photographs clearly illustrate what might have caused the problem. Photo 1 is the position of the tension setting at the time of the broken belt. Photo 2 shows the replacement belt (also PG218) with the correct tension setting I won't even begin to bore you with how difficult it was to undo the tension nut, suffice it to say that a new one had to be fitted after the 'nut cracker' had to be used. All in all a real 'pig of a job' in which nothing went right from day one. The moral of the story...at least for me. Try and fix the problem yourself first because the 'so called professionals' cannot possibly make a worse job of it than you did...except in my case they did ! CERATOTH is now back on the road with a fixed (by me) alternator , a new windscreen washer bottle installed (by me) and a new fan belt fitted (by me) and I only lost a little blood in the process. Take care Guys, Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

Ouch Keith.
Of course Keith doesn't tell you that he had to remove the alternator to get the tensioner nut off as the professionals managed to strip the head in tightening it.

That is the only way to go Keith - that is if you really care about your car like you do. After a year of "warranty" almost every nut and bolt was stripped on the right hand side of the car. Why only the RH side - I do not know? The left inner boot was deliberately punctured and almost everything that was "fixed" on our Niva during that period was up to shite. Perhaps your busted belt was a blessing in disguise in more than one way. One of the first things that gets destroyed on an overtightened fan belt is the inner bearings of the water pump. You should check for any sideways movement on the shaft of the pump to see if the bearings are still ok. Marius

Thanks for that Marius. I did check for any 'freeplay' on both the waterpump (fan) and the alternator before fitting the new belt and all seemed OK...I am still expecting more problems in the future though as a result of 'the professionals work'. Went back to the garage this morning and showed them the photographs and broken fan belt. Their response... "the tensioner always moves to that position when a fan belt breaks" and "the fan belt must have been faulty when it was fitted". My response...not fit to be printed in such a refined site as LOCSA. Will I being back to a certain garage in Primrose...probably not ! Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH
