Good day. I mentioned this in my introduction thread aswell. But thought i should put it here too. I have a grinding noise comming from the center front of my lada and was wondering what it could be. I had to replace the CV boot on the shaft between the GB and the TC at one stage. So might it be that the TC is not allighned correctly? Or might it be bearings in the front dif or TC or could it be that one of the CV are in its way out? Where should i begin looking would you think. Now your gonna laught but this is kinda what it sounds like: ghrrrrr ghrrrr. And it speeds up the faster i drive. Any help would do. Thanks.

Hi Gerrit, Moved my reply here. Grinding nose from the front axle could also be wheel bearings. Feel for excessive heat. I trust you have downloaded the Workshop Manuals Mechanics that I have used in and around Nelspruit are George on 082-5054660. He closed his garage/workshop and now works on Earth moving equipment and long haul breakdowns Horst's Auto Workshop White River 013-751140 ask for Johan In both cases you can tell them I referred you Spikes Joubert Read more: locsa.proboards.com/thread/1786/gerrit-nelspruit?page=1&scrollTo=39460#ixzz2du6LXBwj

Hi Gerrit
Welcome to the forum.
If it is the top and not the bottom, check the timing chain tension

seems like the pinion bearing in the front diff. Start with removing the axle between TC and front diff (engage difflock) ans go for a test drive

Thanks Guys I have not yet received my Lada back from the guy installing the new Carb. He is struggling (Weber 36 DCD). I took it for a test drive today. But all is not well. It seems the new carb is not getting enough fuel (or could it be too much). It stutters when it pulls off and only gets better when you are able to get the revs up over 2500rpm. I feel that I bought a dud, the car has been with this guy over 3 weeks now. Not to worry I'm still a Lada Fan

Hi Gerrit,
I don't mean to insinuate that your mechanic needs advise but watch this video. Weber 36DCD is a great carb, perhaps yours needs to be re-jetted?
!!THIS IS NOT MY VIDEO!!

Hi Douw
The 36DCD is quite a common carb to fit to the Niva

Hello again guys. I have received back my lada from the mechanic and it’s running beautifully now. Only thing is that grinding noise I talked about earlier. I took it to a NelGear a place that deals with gearbox repairs and they told me it is most probably the front diff bearings. Thus they quoted me R 3500.00 to replace them. Now I don’t want to sound like a cheapskate but I think that is a bit expensive.
How difficult is it to remove and install new bearings myself. Do I need specialized equipment? And could I buy the bearings from BearingMan?

You can take the diif out, and strip it yourself, take the bearings to BMG and you may get lucky. Otherwise you will need to order them from overseas (Pavel etc) or get them from the local suppliers like Ventz. Then you NEED to take it to a diff place to get it assembled, there are very specific tolerances. The reassmbly costs from R500 to R800.

Thanks to everyone. Yes it was the Pinion Bearing as well as wheel bearings. But now its fixed R3400 later, but it’s done. Thank you for everyone’s help you guys where on the ball. I’ll be taking the lade now dubbed “ILYA” or “Илья” in Russian to Dilstroom this weekend to have some fun with it. (Will take some pic’s)

I have the exact same noise coming from the front area of my Niva, I replaced the left wheel bearings and did get somewhat less noise, but I still hear the grinding noise. Is there a difference between the diff bearing and the pinion bearing? and what is the final drive bearing? I saw the diff bearing is 11usd on ladapower and don't mind ordering it with other parts just to have the parts for the most likely replacement, because i can't spend too much time opening and closing everything and i need the Niva weekly to drive.

foosh a quick check would be to remove your front prop shaft, engage your diff lock and go for a drive. If the noise is still there it is cv's or front wheel bearings if not there it is the front diff. Tjeers Steve

Ok, I did replace my CVs about 2 months ago so i doubt it is my CVs, but will still check just to confirm the location of the problem. Would it be possible to drive 200km with only rear prop in and difflock engaged? could it damage the difflock?
