hi guys i am a student that recently bought a lada in very good condition mechanically and body wise.I need your advice since , i went through the beginners manual online and came across the sentence which said that ladas are well know for unreliability or something close to that .
I am a student firstly and i am also looking after it well however i am scared that if something breaks it will lead to something else breaking and ya u guys know that chain of events.A few things happen since i bought it that made me actually decide to post this thread now lately i made a copy of a key and the key jammed in the ignition which was the key cutters fault and they spent 3 hours stripping the ignition and now the wiring seems faulty gna go check that out tomorrow though.
i am basically asking you guys from a students point of view if this lada will be an investment or should i prepare myself for stuff that can go wrong every time.i am willing to maintain her but major stuff like a gearbox giving in gna take alot out of my pocket and dont know how long i will be able to put up with it. so i rather wana know should i sell it now if things can spontaneously occur and throw me down or should i keep it since its not unreliable as people says.
i really like this 4x4 but im am starting to think is this a smart choice ?
i would appreciate any advice that you guys can give me anything you feel that can help me clarify my decision
thanx.
Mojo

Hi,
This is a really difficult question to answer, as it depends largely on how well your Lada has been maintained in the past. Most have been neglected due to the lack of local parts and the lack of knowledge on how to maintain them.
This means that most Ladas will need work done on them before they are reliable. If they are maintained properly they are reliable, but expect to have to spend some time and money getting it to that point.

You have bought an excellent full time 4x4. It may have some latent problems but it can be fixed at a fraction of the cost of popular make full time 4x4s.
The question you should really ask yourself is do I require/need a 4x4 and am I willing to fix this budget buy, that I have, to a condition where it will give me trouble free service?
Ponder this before you spend big buck on repairs as you are unlikely to recoup your full repair outlay when selling

i work on a lot of Niva's of our club members. Some of them are bought in good condition but with bad maintenance history and then it takes some time and money to make them the car you want. BUT: all of them are now reliable and good daily drivers. As Conrad said: all depends on the maintenance in the past

Hi Mojo
I got my Niva when I was 18. My first car and I love it! Still have it today and its still the original engine and body as i hope. im 24 years old now!
What happened to me is that yes i had to spend some money and a lot of time on it! I had the motor fixed and never had any problems after that! i had a lot of electrical problems but I had it all done over and never again had problems! It is the best car to have as a student. All the things i have fixed on the Lada was done about 3 years ago. I also still have ignition switch problems but that was caused by a faulty workman ship!
Its the best i have ever driven and still love to drive it! I will never sell this amazing 4x4. Nothing comperes to the feeling I get when im driving it!
I say its a decision you have to make for yourself. Is the car for you or is it not...

Hello Mojo All the above is good comment and advice. The thing is that if you need a car anyway, there will always be a cost of ownership. At least with a Niva they are simple to repair and easy to service. There may be a cost to get on top of the car if it has been neglected, but this is the same with any used car.
Come at this from a different direction. Do you want a car that is different and has loads of character. A vehicle that makes you smile as you get in helps you stand out from others. Yes? Then stick with her, the Niva will repay loyalty, just look after her, as you would a good woman! paulg
