hi there we recently bought a Lada Niva 1.7i and it has some problems which we desperately need fixing. Can anybody advise if there are there any Lada mechanics in the Cape Town area?
many thanks

Hi Kelli
Welcome to the forum.
There is a mechanic in Belville who specialises in Lada's, google for him under Cape Lada Doctor. However, what is the problem? It is quiet probably cheaper and easier to fix it yourself.

thank you both Steve and Spikes for the reply.
The Lada is currently with our local auto electrician. The reverse lights are not working and we need to get road worthy done this week.
He has reported a leak under the dash board which messed with the wiring and as a result the hooter, indicators and lights were not working properly which he has now modified. Although, the reverse switch is broken and suggested putting a switch to the dash board as this is accepted by road worthy centres.
The main issues with the Lada is it is struggling to drive as it jolts and jumps, usually 2nd and 3rd if its small driving, and i noticed going up hill is when it struggles a bit more. Usually it will drive OK at 60kmph anything lower it jolts. And sometimes the Check Engine light comes on.
The Lada also revs slightly, sitting in traffic today, it was revving at 20kmph. The Lada also usually cuts out when stopping.
When we bought the Lada, the previous owner said he had to change the petrol tank due to rust. When we told him about the jolting problem he took back the Lada to blow clean the pipes to the petrol filter, but nothing has changed and we still have this problem.
If you had any advice for me that would be brilliant !!
Apart from these issues we love the Lada and want to get on a road trip !!

Kelli,
Have a look at this thread;http://locsa.proboards.com/thread/1609/throttle-body-injection-specific-problems
Pay particular attention to the two rubber pipes coming out of the back(Cab side)the Throttle Body. If they are perished replace them. Also note that replacing the the Throttle Position Sensor cured Spencer's TBI
I hope you have downloaded the manuals and spares handbooks.

Hi Kelli Here is the link to the parts catalogue: www.ladaniva.co.uk/lada/partscat.pdfAll lada spares can be ordered from www.ladapower.com. Delivery takes two to three weeks BUT customs in JHB can hold up parcels. Local spares suppliers are listed in the Spares topic Regards Spikes

Afternoon All
well, we failed road worthy:
Petrol fumes - it has quite a strong smell. we previously tightened the clamps, the smell went away but it keep recurring. previous owner changed the petrol tank, could this have anything to do with it?
Body rust - the main concern is rust around the front window causing a leak which is messing with the electricals. we have just been quoted R2000 by a panel beater to sort this problem.
no brakes right rear and fluid leak - a mechanic advised new wheel cylinders and that the part is generic. can anyone confirm this please? he quoted us R1000 to fix said problem....does this seem reasonable?
any advice would be much appreciated before we go ahead and pay.

lovely, thanks for the advice Conrad. The forum has been a big help to us. We will check out the evaporator box for any cracks. The Lada is booked in next week with the mechanic and panel beater, fingers crossed all goes well

Hi Steve yes we've made some progress and managed to get our Lada through road worthy yesterday. we are feeling very relieved Now the road worthy stress has gone we can concentrate on the jolting issue. We are going to check the 2 rubber pipes coming out the back of the throttle body as Spikes suggested and we've also been in touch with Ventz who thinks the TPS could be faulty. we are doing process of elimination starting with the cheapest first...a friend suggested trying some fuel system cleaner because there was rust in the fuel tank which could be blocking the jets....but this hasnt made any difference so far. Would you know how we can check if the TPS is faulty? we would want to be sure before we pay out R1500 for a new one from Ventz. We had a panel beater remove the rust around the front window as rain kept leaking in under the glove box messing with the electrics. After the rain last night we still have a leak somewhere as there was a puddle of water under the glove box and we cant figure how its getting in. We cant close the bonnet properly because the latch it faulty but it doesnt seem to be leaking and getting in under the bonnet. i guess we will go back to the panel beater and see what he says. we have friends visiting from the UK next week and its a shame we cant take it on a little road trip

Do disconnect the battery for 1 minute or so to reset the ECU if you replace the pipes BUT before you start after replacing the pipeswe are doing process of elimination starting with the cheapest first...a friend suggested trying some fuel system cleaner because there was rust in the fuel tank which could be blocking the jets....but this hasnt made any difference so far. Where was the fuel smell coming from? See notes above

Please try and elaborate as to the jolting, I had a similiar problem and it ended up that I had broken teeth on a satelite gear in the rear diff, however this jolt occured with a loud CLANK noise and was distinctly coming from the rear. the fuel smell was due to a snapped nozzle from the fuel separator box and 1 of the bottom hoses had broken off. the pipe was very brittle and kept snapping when trying to fix it, but we managed it using more hose, superglue and bicarbs of soda... found this tip in one of the previous threads. it seems to have done the trick for now.
the jolting/stuttering usually happens anything under 60kmph, mainly small driving in 2nd and 3rd gear, once i get to about 60kpmh i have to go 4th for it to be smooth-ish then i can pick up speed.
ive noticed if i release my foot off the accelerator there is a bit of a stutter too
when it is stuttering there is a fuel smell also
going up hill seems to be worse
when it is very bad it looses power and bounces along as it seems to want to cut out and then sometimes it does.
Check Engine light has come on a couple of times....i dont know whether its related or something to do with the leak...the battery light is sometimes illuminated and now when indicating left all the back lights are flashing like a disco so we need to get it back to the auto electrician.

Hi If it is purely jolting, I am inclined to think that you have alignment issues of the Gearbox and Transfer case or maybe problems within the gearbox, however stuttering leads me to think there are vacuum / fuel issues. Has the fuel tank been de-rusted? Have the fuel filter/s been replaced? Have you checked the pressure of the fuel in the fuel line (should be about 2.5 bar)? Have you checked that all the vacuum hoses are in good condition and that they have not perished (especially the ends)? Have you reset the tension of the timing chain? Are all the plugs firing? I am trying to get hold of butasteve to see if he can provide any assistance, he is in Paarl. Tjeers Steve

Hi,
If you do fiddle with the MAP sensor and other vacuum lines, beware of breaking the fittings, they are in a really uncomfortable position. When I had issues and went through a similar trial and error process, I broke the fitting on the TBI unit.
