Hi Everyone,
I am hoping that somebody will be able to give me some advice. I am new on the forum, I have bough a Niva Lada 2 days ago. It is a 1.7i 2001 model.
My biggest concern is that when I drive my Lada the heat gauge the needle is close to the red area. I don't know if this is normal? There is a electric fan installed and it still has the normal fan?
Please help.
Thanks
Heinz

Hi Heinz
Not it is NOT normal for the gauge to be that high and you should find the reason for the overheating before you do serious damage to the engine. Normal position is vertical or slightly to the colder side of vertical.
You will find a lot of heat(over) related info here:http://locsa.proboards.com/thread/1049/running-read-locsa-proboards-thread
Do you still have the factory fan shroud fitted? It is essential to have that fitted Does the electrical fan blow trough the rad core from the front? and is it switching on? Refer to the workshop manual to ensure there is no air trapped in the system(second most likely culprit) Most likely culprit is a leaking radiator cap or non std cap fitted Is there a std thermostat fitted and is it opening at 85C Is the std overflow bottle still fitted Lastly is the radiator core clean and do you have antifreeze mixed in the correct proportions?

Hi Heinz As in life - the unfortunate reality is that not all Niva owners are honest and trustworthy people (from my own experience ). The addition of an electric fan is a sure tell-tale that the previous owner struggled with overheating issues. Again - unfortunately - you are now stuck with a the unpleasant process of trying to solve your problem step by step. Getting a original cap is a very good starting point. Best of luck AND PLEASE fire away if you have any other issues. Marius

Heinz....where in Gauteng are you ? You are welcome to give me a ring and visit me in Germiston if you think that two heads may be 'cooler' than one in sorting out the overheating problem. CERATOTH had similar issues which are hopefully now resolved. Regards Keith and CERATOTH 072 993 4955. ps Spikes I don't have a fan shroud fitted and I'm going to have to order one from Pavel as I've just about given up trying to get one locally :-(

Cheers

Hi again Spikes. My overheating problems were caused by a seized waterpump, faulty rad cap and air in the system. Still have the air problem from time to time (see previous post) but it's not a 'biggie'. CERATOTH did not come with a cowl when I got her and Lada Centurion seemed very reluctant to fit one and I haven't really pushed them about it. Temp. gauge registers just above vertical and since I fitted the (manual switch) electric fan no more problems in summer heat traffic jams :-) Next time I order something large from Pavel I will include the shroud in the order. Really should have done it when i sent off for the starter motor ! Regards, Keith. ps Heinz.....give me a ring 072 993 4955

Keith next time you order please order me a shroud as well and 2 thrust rings. Not worried about how long it takes, just looking forward to some cold beers.
Tjeers
