hi, does any one have experience with these two issues in south africa? other sites are great, but not helpfull when it comes to sourcing the materials.
lets put stuff we can easily find in southern africa and that has been proven to work.
one popular conversion im always hearing about here in Moz is toyota's 4Y engine. apparently its almost a straight fit (needs a gearbx adaptor plate) and being a toyota it should be reliable...
what mags are those fitted to the sidekick and intermediate versions? where can one find em and at around how much? one day ill post a widebody kit i designed on photoshop a few years ago. just gotta find the pics.
as anyone done a power steering conversion? how about bigger axles and auto boxes? and all locking diffs?
Regards

Hi Aderito Unfortunately I am not aware of any complete report about successful transplants (engine or power steering) on this forum. Having said that, I often see ads in the news media - about Ladas for sale in SA, with engine transplants.
If you ever stumble across a gearbox adapter plate for a Toyota transplant, please let me know.
I think Ronnie should be able to supply more info about the mags on the Sidekick and Intermediate versions. Jan Pretorius (Centurion Lada) might have mags - but his prices might be a bit steep.
I recently saw a local ad about a Lada with a Difflock at the front axle, but unfortunately I do not have more details.
Regards
Danie

Hi Aderito I can`t tell you who was the manufacturer of the sidekick rims, and agree Jan at Lada Centurion can probably supply At a price you would not want to pay. I will include a photo so you can try some of the big suppliers who may have a close match. Regards Ronnie

Hi All
If I needed to replace my 1700 motor I would look for a specific type of motor.
Preferably it should be between 1,8 - 2,5L , should be carb operated for easy maintenance, should have freely availible parts and have torque availible from low revs.
To get meet these reqirements it boils down to straight 6 with the stroke longer than the bore.
Long stroke gives good torque and the straight 6 is an engine type with torque from 1500 - 3500 rpm. this makes it the perfect motor for offroading and it also has pulling power higher up in the rev range.

Hi Ari
One possible engine transplant I often think about, is a 2 litre Ford Saphire / Sierra engine, complete with automatic gearbox 'n all. The Saphire engine is quite short, and should fit in the engine bay.
I haven't seen the automatic gearbox though - it might be too long to fit the Transfer Box at the rear.......

Hi Danie
The one I'm thinking of is the Toyota 1G which is a 2L straight 6, not sure of its length though or low end torque.

Hi Ari Unfortunately I've never seen one of those Toyota engines before.
I think one should just be careful not to use an engine which might be too strong for the drivetrain - things could break under tough driving conditions.
Anyway, this is some details about the 2 L Ford engine, compared with the Lada 1.7 engine:
KW Lada 1.7 L : 58 kw @ 5200 Rpm Ford 2.0 L : 75.3 kw @ 5200 Rpm
Torque Lada 1.7 : Unknown Ford 2.0 L : 154.3 Nm @ 4000 Rpm
Unfortunately the max torque on the Ford engine is also on the higher (Rpm) end - Like the Lada's (I think).
The automatic gearboxes on the Ford engines are 3 speed units - with a 1 : 1 ratio on the third gear. (Same ratio as on the 4 th gear on all Lada boxes.)
Regards

Thanks for the torque info Marius - the Turbonutter downloads (where I got the info from) only mention the max Kw / Hp specs - nothing about max torque.
Regards
Danie P.S. The Turbonutter specs seem to be slightly different as well.

Hi Danie
Nice thing about the Lada's tourque is - for a petrol engine - it happens at relatively low revs.
Some other specs with regard to the engine that might be useful: Bore/Stroke = 82/80 Compression Ratio = 9.3:1 Power to weight ratio (W/kg) = 48.7
