Hi All.
One of our new forum members from Knysna contacted me this morning regarding this problem. Unfortunately I can not remember his name, I think it has to do with the young age.
He got his Lada for two weeks, a 2001 1.7 model with 40000km on, and from yesterday he battle to get the car in gear or out of gear. I am not sure what is the problem. I had a simmilar problem two weeks after I bought mine and Jan repaired it at a huge cost. Their was broken selectors, welded selecters and nuts welded to some of the shafts which broke loose. The gearbox were apparently repaired three weeks before I bought it by a so called big gearbox repair compony on the East Rand. His excuse was that the parts are not availlable.
Can anybody maybe throw some light on this issue. I ask him to lock in to the Forum tonight and maybe someone will know what caused this problem.
Regards.
Hercules.

Hi Hercules
Unfortunately my personal gearbox experience is limited to removing the main gearlever for a 2 liter oil refill only.
I know that if the inner steel selector arms are not lined up properly when the gearlever gets re-installed, the gearlever could get stuck. So perhaps the owner could have a look there..........he just have to make sure the gearlever is in the neutral position before removing the gearlever - the three selector arms inside the gearbox will be lined up nicely when the gearlever is in neutral.
Just bear in minds that the outer three nuts will have to be loosened to remove the gearlever - if the owner try to loosen the inner three nuts (close to the gearlever), he could easily drop a bolt inside the geabox.
If the three steel selectors are not in line when the gearlever gets removed (with the gearlever in the Nutral position), the problem could be right there.
My only other gearbox related problem was that the gearlever jumped out of 4th gear at one stage. The problem has been solved by a local Gearbox and Diff company - they rewelded / rebuilt a worn brass fork selector..........

jumping out of 4th is usually the curved washer behind thrust bearing sleeve broken........easy fix.....
is his crunching trying to get into gear??? (clutch adjust/master/slave cyl)
or just the lever is tight?? (still look at clutch adjust.)

Just remember that the gear lever should not be held in place by hand once the car start jumping out of gear.
Holding the gear lever in place will eventually cause more damage to the gearbox - like excessive wear to the selector forks, and damage to the gear synchro.
