I got these nigh lock nuts that is a perfect replacement for the original front wheel bearing nuts. I ordered them from a tiny engineering shop in the Western Cape some time ago but I’m sure you can order it from most spare shops etc. The nut is a little high so you need to take off about 5mm. You can do this at any good engineering shop – and as in my case – most probably for free. These nuts cost a fraction of the original and best of all – it will last a lifetime! For safety reasons you should check the clearance on a regular basis - esp if you do a lot of off-road traveling.

Hi Marius
Do you perhaps know what size those nuts are, and whether it is metric or imperial ?
Does it fit on any standard bolt ?
Regards
Danie

I just took an old nut to the shop - they measured it and ordered the nuts. I think it's metric but I'm not sure?

Hi Ronnie
If you don't mind - during your next visit to Durban, please bring those old nuts which you showed me, with.
I usually visit the biggest Bolt and Nut shop in Durban a couple of times every week - it should be fairly easy to find something which fits then.........will let everyone know.

Danie

Hi Marius
I assume you have never tried to fit one of those nuts on any bolt to figure out what size it actually is ?

Hi Danie I may be wrong but I think the nuts are m16 x 1.5. I had the old nuts in my hand a couple of days ago, and now I can`t remember where I put them Regards Ronnie

Thanks Bob - the M18 nut with 1.5 pitch is a very common nut, and should be available at any local "Bolt & Nut" dealer.
Today I have been at S.A. Fasteners (161 Gale Street, Durban) and bought myself two of those nuts @ R5.00 each - they've got hundreds in stock........
Regards
Danie.

Hi guys
On checking and cleaning my front suspension I discovered that the clearance on the front wheel bearings was somewhat larger since fitting the new nuts and had to readjust them.
I have no fear that the nuts will come undone - but I would advise that you recheck the clearance.
Another unrelated issue is that the top left mounting on the shock is beginning to show signs of tearing and I will probably have to attend to that little issue first before fitting grease points on the joints.

Hi I also had a problem with used nuts so desided to make a plan I`ve bought normal M18x1.5 nuts and machined them at approx. a 10th of the price. Marius when I did my trade I were told to use a nylock only once because the nylon gets threaded the first time you use it and afterwards it looses its effectiveness and the heat involved here bothers me! Does anybody know the size of the nut that the for bantams/ mazda rustler/323 use on the rear bearings. If I remember correctly they are also m18x1.5. Will try and find out from ford on monday.

Oh boy!
Firstly this not a REPLACEMENT PART it was only recommended as a cheaper alternative.
Secondly I did mention that you would need to check the clearance more often - especially when you do a lot of gravel/off-road driving.
However if there is a need that this type of mod should carry this kind of warning I would recommend that the same should apply to other non-standard mods like - say for instance - a 50mm lift which is quite a radical mod in terms of seriously altering the handling characteristics of the Lada?
