Ok, so I am trying to figure out what my rear wheel problem is and so far the right wheel and side shaft are out. But I have stripped the holes in the left side drum where you are supposed to put bolts thru to push the drum off. Any ideas on how to remove? And secondly, anyone got a drum for me?

Hi Steve
It should help if you back off the hand brake cable.

spray some wd40 on the center where it sits on the axle. Then very carefully heat the center with a torch. Hit it hard with a (rubber!!!) hammer on the sides while turning the drum.
If it really wont come off, remove the 4 nuts that hold the half shaft and remove the shaft with the drum still on it.

Boiling water poured liberally all over the drum and a 4 pd hanger did the trick. Now to get the diff out.

Ok, but what is the problem? The diff, wheel bearings or maybe the universal joints?

Sorry I only saw this now. My drums were put back into service when one of my new callipers started leaking. Until I can locate genuine vw callipers I'm going to continue using the drums. I'm not comfortable with the quality of the pirate parts after what happened.
