Hi , need help /advice desperatly. On friday my niva ran out of petrol, no problem put more in and start, and thats where things did not go so well. It won't start . I checked that fuel was getting to the carb , yes . Put a cap ful directly into the carb , not even a cough! take plugs out , hmm some are wet try them put them back , nada. Ok take plugs out give the ens a light sand to get carbon off , still nada. Remove top of carb , hmm fuel in the float chamber and all that looks good , not that I know much. Sigh so where to from here

Hi Graham
I have also accidently done this but I never had problems.
I presume that the starter motor is working and the engine turns over but won't fire.
Do you have compression and spark? You can check compression by removing the plugs and using a compression gauge and for spark attach a timing light to each plg and test them separately.
For a petrol engine you need spark , compression , fuel and air so one of these are missing.
By running empty you may have sucked dirt into your carb and now you have a blockage.
Try this so long I'm sure the others will add to this soon.

Hi Graham Ari has covered every thing I can think of. The most likely thing is dirt as running out of petrol should not affect any thing else. One Question for Ari .How can you run out of petrol when you have 2 tanks? Regards Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
We were moving house so we were very busy and I thought there was still some fuel in the 2nd tank but it was empty the main tank's light had not been on long.
How many litres is the reserve on the lada?

Hi Graham.
Look if you got spark, if you got then check the compression by taking out the plugs and hold your thumb over the plug hole while somebody swing the motor. Check all four the cylinders. If you have not compression, your timing chain tensioner went and the valves are bent. It is possible that you did not run of petrol but bent valves. The same happen to me 18 months ago. The tensioner shoe should be replaced every 120000 - 140000 km.
All the best and hope you solved the problem quickly.
Regards.
Hercules.

Very informative - this post already qualifies as a "Sticky" !

Hi Ronnie
I did not mean the 2nd tank, I meant how much fuel is left once the orange petrol light on the dash comes on.
Hi Graham
I hope you come right and that it is not what Hercules says as that will be quite expensive.
Ari
PS Danie how do you make it a sticky(is that when it has the redpin marking?)

Hi Ari
Sorry, The warning light if it was like my present Lada starts blinking at 1/2 tank. I stripped out the sender unit and carefully bent the contacts. It now comes on when about 8 litres remains.

It now comes on when about 8 litres remains. that's about right,6-8 litres. usually still get a fair distance before running out. first thing i would check for is spark. could be a fluke this happened at the same time, but if you change your filters reg. etc.,less likely to be rubbish in carb (would usually still fire while winding over) main reason for loss of spark in these is the control module packing up. it is usually mounted on drivers (rh) side inner front guard,7 pin plug. that's the first thing to look at if no spark. people waste money on coils, but i have never known a coil on a lada to be the problem in the end. (typical lada quality)

Solution Found. One of the wires to the control unit/regulator was faulty and needed replacing , a mechanic a few blocks from me found it , if only I had had my multimeter at home , could have found that my self , but he did not charge a lot . It always the little things . Thanks for all the responses
